Summary Aside from their love for hoops, Lucas and Nathan seemed to have little in common. But the two young men are bound by the fact that they share the same father. The star of the basketball team, Nathan was raised to inherit his father's popularity and wealth, while his half-brother, Lucas, was raised in modest surroundings, the only child of a single mom. When Lucas joined the Ravens team, his transition into Nathan's world created a love triangle with Peyton. Complicating things even further, Peyton's feisty best friend, Brooke, quickly set her sights on Lucas as well. And it didn't take Nathan long to notice Lucas' best friend, Haley, an intriguing girl who helped bad-boy Nathan become a kinder person. The journeys of the people who inhabit Tree Hill have been vast, from Lucas's tentative steps off the river court into high school popularity, from Nathan and Haley's first kiss to marriage, from Peyton and Brooke's deep friendship to their estrangement and back. But in other ways, the journey has only just begun. No, not that one. When it comes back at midseason next year, "One Tree Hill" will hit the fast-forward button and pick up four years into the future, after its characters have finished college and are starting their lives as young adults. It's one of two CW shows that were toying with a leap forward as a way of reinventing itself. The other was "Veronica Mars," which won't be back for a fourth season. Its creator, Rob Thomas, had proposed changes that would follow Veronica (Kristen Bell) as a young FBI agent, but the network opted not to renew the ratings-challenged series. "It was something we talked about, but I honestly don't think it's going to happen," CW Entertainment president Dawn Ostroff told reporters Thursday at the network's upfront. She also said she had talks with Thomas about doing "something else" for the network but declined to elaborate. (Bell, meanwhile, will serve as the narrator for the network's new series "Gossip Girl.") The "One Tree Hill" reboot also originated with its creator, Mark Schwan. The change will allow the show's core cast, most of whom are in their mid-20s, to play closer to their own ages and will also avoid the difficult high school-to-college transition that has tripped up shows ranging from "Beverly Hills, 90210" to "The O.C." and "Veronica Mars." Online video diaries will give fans a glimpse into the intervening years between seasons. "We just felt that the storylines [the show] would have at college are probably not as interesting as the storylines we could do if they've already graduated college," Ostroff says. "It also allows us to show what did happen to them in college through flashbacks. We felt it could go more places creatively, and Mark Schwan wanted to do it, so we're very excited." In giving the series a midseason premiere, Ostroff also hopes to be able to run it with as few repeats as possible. The "24"-style scheduling is a mini-trend this season, with ABC's "Lost" and CBS' new drama "Swingtown" also adopting that model. http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-cw...,7679824.story MEANWHILE: "One Tree Hill" goes back into production in mid-July for January mid-season unveiling, clearly putting plenty of distance between high school graduation and where they're picking up with the gang from Tree Hill, N.C., as young adults. We'll find Nathan's (James Lafferty) and Haley's (Bethany Joy Lenz) son, James, is now nearly 5 years old, though it seems like he was born just a couple weeks ago on the season finale. Wait, he was. This tyke is mature beyond his age and sometimes treated like a grownup. James will come complete with a nanny named Carrie, who is personable, nurturing -- and beautiful. You've got to know that's going to mean trouble somehow. Last edited by MickBeth : 05-25-2008 at 07:06 AM. |

Speaking of that baby we left in diapers last season, expect one smart little boy when we return.Source: TV Guide's Michael Ausiello |

(to Jason) I'm sorry, I didn't mean to creatively step on you. I have some experience -- JASON: (snickers) What? Playing church organ? Peyton's had enough. PEYTON: Actually, she had a major record deal, a Billboard hit and a sold-out national tour. You, on the other hand, are the lead singer of a band that plays in dive bars for free beer. So yeah, you could benefit from her experience. JASON: Whatever. I'm taking a smoke break. As he storms off: PEYTON: Jason, we only have the studio for another hour -- But he's gone. Peyton and Haley exchange looks. INT. EDITING BAY - EVENING Mouth watches raw segment footage when the tech guy enters. TECH GUY: So, Mouth. I saw you coming out of Alice's office. MOUTH: (nervous) You did? TECH GUY: She must've really worked you over. Mouth tenses, does he know? TECH GUY: Don't let it get to you. Alice hates everyone. Mouth breathes a sigh of relief. His secret is safe. TECH GUY: It's like, we got a solid crew around here. You wouldn't know it, the way she tears into us. MOUTH: Yeah. She does like calling the shots. TECH GUY: Like with me. She keeps telling me how to run my feeds. She's wrong, but I can't say jack. No one can. MOUTH: She never lets me get a word in. TECH GUY: She's lucky she's hot. I just wish someone would stand up to her some day. Off Mouth, thinking. EXT. STREET - EVENING Peyton and Haley walk from the studio. PEYTON: Sorry about Jason. HALEY: It's fine. I've worked with self-centered musicians before? Chris Keller ring a bell? PEYTON: Only his own. HALEY: Actually, if you're open to it, I'd love to work with them. PEYTON: Like, produce the album? But aren't you too busy? HALEY: A few days ago, I was. But since Carrie got here, I've had time to think. And you know what I realized? Haley starts slow, but gets worked up. **************** LUCAS: So what about you? I mean, what are you gonna do? WHITEY: Now that I'm retired? Probably go to basketball games and yell at the coach. Lucas smiles as Whitey walks off. INT. LOCKER ROOM - CONTINUOUS Across the way, Nathan's being interviewed by a reporter while he changes back into his street clothes. REPORTER: After a season like that, the D1 scouts are gonna have to take notice. NATHAN: Right now, I'm just happy to be playing the game. If this year has taught me anything, it's that the most important thing is my family. That lands on Luke as he approaches... LUCAS: Hey, Nate, bus is leaving. NATHAN: Okay. (to the reporter) Thanks for your time, sir. As they start out of the locker room, Lucas can't resist... LUCAS: How'd it go? NATHAN: That was the first time in a year I didn't get asked about point-shaving. INT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT Lucas and Nathan exit the stadium to find Haley and Jamie waiting for them. NATHAN: Hey, you ready? HALEY: You should go with the team. We just wanted to say goodbye. Nathan kisses Haley then Jamie. NATHAN: Alright, get some sleep, kiddo. See you at home. Haley and Jamie head off in another direction as Nathan and Lucas move through the crowd toward the team bus. A fan wearing a Vikings jersey calls out to Nathan... FAN: Hey, Scott, you got a cute kid. Wonder if he'll grow up to be a cheater like his old man. Nathan tries to ignore the guy. LUCAS: Come on, let's get to the bus. FAN: Just think, you can teach him to shave and shave points! In a flash, Nathan's on the guy, gripping him by the throat. NATHAN: How 'bout I shave your face on the pavement? LUCAS: Nate! Lucas wraps Nathan in a bear hug and drags him to the bus. The fan cowers off. As they pile on board, we reveal a troubled Whitey watching the scene from a distance... DISSOLVE TO: INT. BUS - NIGHT - MOVING The team bus moves through the night. Lucas is slumped alone in a seat near the front. He checks his email on his iPhone. There's a message from Peyton. It reads: "Play this song when you win the championship." Lucas downloads the song. As the TBD song plays, a smile creeps on to Lucas's face. * ACT TWO FADE IN INT. L.A. RECORD COMPANY - MAIL ROOM - MORNING Peyton is pounding futilely on a temperamental copy machine when a co-worker comes in. CO-WORKER: Hey Sawyer, call for you on line one. PEYTON: Thanks. (picks up) This is Peyton. INT. CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS - INTERCUT Lucas is walking down the hallway, on his cell phone. LUCAS: Hey, it's me. PEYTON: Hey! I've been trying to call you all morning. I saw the game highlights online. I wish I coulda been there. LUCAS: Me too. So what are you wearing? PEYTON: (embarrassed) What? Luke, I can't do... that right now. I'm at work. LUCAS: I'm thinking your Ramones tee over the white long-sleeved shirt. And those jeans with the rip in the knee. We stay with Peyton as she checks herself -- it's exactly what she's wearing. PEYTON: Wow, you're good. LUCAS: (O.S.) Really good. Peyton gets that last part in stereo. She turns to see Lucas standing there, cell in hand. Her eyes go wide. PEYTON: Luke! She rushes to him and they embrace. PEYTON: I can't believe you're really here. LUCAS: Well, since you couldn't come to me -- Peyton kisses him. After they part, Lucas looks around the crappy mailroom. LUCAS: So this is Marketing and Distribution? Off Peyton's sheepish look... INT. L.A. RECORD COMPANY - MORNING Lucas trails Peyton down a busy corridor as she pushes a cart, delivering mail to various executives. PEYTON: Okay, so I may have pimped-up my job description a little bit. Basically I work in the mail room. LUCAS: Hey, this is Hollywood. It's all about spin, right? I bet you know more about music than any of these tools. PEYTON: Shhh. You're gonna get me in trouble. Besides, they're not all tools. Peyton starts to put some mail in a box on an office door. A petulant executive swipes it from her. EXECUTIVE: Not in the box, on my desk! PEYTON: Right. Sorry. EXECUTIVE: (to Lucas) And you...onion bagel, light on the cream cheese. LUCAS: (playing along) Right away, Carl. EXECUTIVE: It's John. Peyton shakes her head at Lucas. Best just to move on. LUCAS: Well, at least the people are nice. Seriously, why do you put up with this? PEYTON: I'll show you why. Peyton points out a young girl in a nearby office. PEYTON: See her? Three months ago she was in the mail room. Now she's a junior A&R executive. LUCAS: I bet she didn't produce two albums by the time she graduated high school. PEYTON: Listen, you better get out here before we both get fired. LUCAS: Okay, I made us dinner reservations for eight. (Peyton frowns) What, too late? PEYTON: Actually, kinda early. We usually go 'til at least nine o'clock. LUCAS: I'll make it nine-thirty. PEYTON: Meet you at the restaurant, okay? Text me the address. Before she starts off, Peyton pulls Lucas into a big kiss. As they part... PEYTON: It's so good to see you, Luke. Peyton continues down the hallway. Lucas smiles. INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT Lucas waits at a table, wearing a suit and tie, no Peyton in sight. He fidgets with a spoon. The waiter comes over... WAITER: (impatient) Another basket of bread, sir? LUCAS: She'll be here any minute. The waiter shrugs. After another beat, Peyton finally enters (she's still in her work clothes). Lucas brightens when he sees her. PEYTON: I'm so sorry I'm late. I got stuck going over the Canyon -- LUCAS: It's okay, I'm glad you're here. He pulls out the chair for her. As she sits, she eyes him... PEYTON: Look at you. LUCAS: What? PEYTON: It's just been so long since I've seen someone in a suit. Unless he's an agent or lawyer. Or a successful novelist. LUCAS: I don't know about that. Everyday I get another rejection letter. PEYTON: Your book is so good, Luke. I'll happen. I know it. INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT Peyton picks at the Chilean Sea Bass on her plate. It's late in the meal. * And then he's gone. INT. LAX AIRPORT - DAY Lucas is at the counter, dealing with a ticket agent. LUCAS: I need to get back a little earlier than expected. TICKET AGENT: Let's see what we can do. INT. HOTEL ROOM - DAY Peyton wakes up and scans the room... PEYTON: Luke? She spies the CD next to her on the pillow. It says everything. INT. LAX AIRPORT - DAY Lucas is still at the ticket counter when his cell rings. He picks it up. LUCAS: Hello? WE INTERCUT WITH: INT. LINDSEY'S OFFICE - DAY Lindsey is sitting at her desk. LINDSEY: Hi, is this Lucas Scott? LUCAS: Yeah, who's this? LINDSEY: My name's Lindsey Strauss. I'm a junior editor at Putnam and Pratt. I, um, read your novel. LUCAS: Oh. It's nice of you to call. Everyone else sends their rejection first class. LINDSEY: (smiles) Actually, I loved it. I passed it on to my boss and he feels the same way. (a silent beat) Hello? LUCAS: (stunned) Sorry, I'm still here. LINDSEY: What I'm saying is... We want to publish your book, Lucas. How soon can you be in New York? We stay with Lucas, who's trying to process all of this. LUCAS: I'll figure something out... Okay, I look forward to meeting you, too. He hangs up and turns back to the ticket agent. LUCAS: I need to go to New York. (can't believe it) They're publishing my novel. TICKET AGENT: Congratulations. That must be a dream come true. Lucas nods. Then he navigates his phone to Peyton's number, considers dialing it for a beat, but decides not to. INT. L.A. RECORD COMPANY - DAY Peyton is delivering mail, a hallow expression on her face. The executive approaches. EXECUTIVE: Hey, I need you to go on a coffee run. PEYTON: (numb) Okay, I'll do it in a minute. EXECUTIVE: I don't have a minute. But Peyton doesn't move. EXECUTIVE: Hey. PEYTON: (snaps) I said I need a goddamn minute. The startled executive backs off, leaving Peyton alone. Tears begin to flow. And as she wipes them away, we... FADE OUT END OF ACT THREE * FADE IN: INT. NEW YORK PARTY - NIGHT An upscale bar, thirty-eight stories above Manhatten. Champagne is flowing and literati mingle about. An easel sits near the entrance with an oversize mock-up of Lucas's book cover: "An Unkindness of Ravens." Lucas is cornered by a senior editor... SENIOR EDITOR: Don't get me wrong, the writing's good, but I won't lie to you... When we found out your father's a convicted murderer, well, that's exactly the kind of hook we need in today's market. From a few feet away Lindsey reads Lucas's discomfort. LINDSEY: I think our newest literary talent needs a drink. As she guides him off, the editor calls after them... SENIOR EDITOR: When you're done, let's talk about changing that title! Lindsey and Lucas move toward the bar. LUCAS: What's wrong with the title? LINDSEY: They say that about every book. I love the title. A murder of crows. A parliament of owls... LUCAS: You seem kinda young to be an editor. LINDSEY: You seem kinda young to have a book being published. LUCAS: Fair enough. * LINDSEY: (smiles at him) That's all you, Lucas. But can I ask you something? The Luke and Peyton in the novel... Lucas considers the question for a moment, then... LUCAS: No. LINDSEY: (disappointed) Oh. I'm sorry. I was really rooting for them. (beat) I'll see ya Monday. Lindsey departs. After another beat, an assistant finds Lucas. ASSISTANT: Excuse me, Mr. Scott, there's someone here to see you. She said to tell you she's from Tree Hill. The assistant steps aside to reveal... Brooke Davis. BROOKE: Well, well, Lucas Scott. They embrace, happy to see each other. BROOKE: I wasn't gonna miss a chance to spend a night on the town with a soon-to-be bestselling author. LUCAS: I'm glad you came. It's good to see you, Brooke. INT. NEW YORK APARTMENT - NIGHT Brooke leads Lucas into an upscale apartment. BROOKE: So my mom decided to move here from L.A. a few months ago since my dad travels so much. Personally I think they should just man up and call it a trail separation. * EXT. NEW YORK BAR - NIGHT Brooke and Lucas sit at a crowded bar. BROOKE: Did you see the look on her face? You'd think someone spewed on her Jimmy Choo's. LUCAS: I'm glad you're enjoying this. BROOKE: Oh, come on. You and Peyton are gonna work things out. LUCAS: I don't think so, Brooke. Not this time. BROOKE: It sounds like you gave her an ultimatum. Trust me, there's no better way to paralyze a girl. LUCAS: Brooke, how many times have you talked to Peyton since you left L.A.? The question touches a raw spot for Brooke. BROOKE: That's not her fault. We're both busy. LUCAS: And today she broke up with her boyfriend. Has she even called you? Brooke doesn't answer. Lucas shakes his head. LUCAS: Things have changed. BROOKE: You're just saying that because you're hurt. And I get it. But I don't think you mean any of it. A long beat passes as Lucas takes in the floor... BROOKE: You know what? We should get drunk. Really, really drunk. (beat) But first lemme see that ring again. Lucas hands Brooke the ring and the bartender takes notice. BARTENDER: Well, well... Congratulations! The crowd applauds. Lucas and Brooke try to protest. BARTENDER: Champagne on the house! More applause. Lucas and Brooke exchange a look -- why not? Brooke slips the ring onto her finger and puts on her best smile. As a champagne cork pops and drink flows, we... TIME CUT TO: EXT. CENTRAL PARK - NIGHT Brooke and Lucas walk near Central Park, both a little tipsy. BROOKE: Who knew that ring trick would get us free drinks all over Midtown? They pass a horse-drawn carriage. The driver notices them. DRIVER: Can I give you two a ride? Lucas and Brooke exchange a look. LUCAS: Why not? It is our engagement night. DRIVER: In that case, ride's free. BROOKE: (to Lucas) This diamond ring is gold. EXT. CARRIAGE RIDE - NIGHT Brooke and Lucas ride in the back of the carriage as it winds through Central Park. It's an incredibly romantic setting. DRIVER: So what do you two have planned for your lives together? Brooke and Lucas share a glance, no choice but to play along. BROOKE: Well, we're definitely gonna be a power couple. He'll be a famous novelist, I'll have my own fashion line. LUCAS: But we'll still have time for a big family. BROOKE: Two boys and a girl. They're both getting swept up in the fantasy, with a healthy assist from the champagne. LUCAS: I'll coach little league... BROOKE: And I'll bake treats for the team. Well, buy them anyway. LUCAS: We can spend summers at our beach house... BROOKE: And winters in the South of France. LUCAS: It won't matter where we are as long as we're together. DRIVER: That's the key. Success is wonderful. But finding someone to love. Having them love you back.. The driver smiles at Brooke and Lucas, then turns back. DRIVER: Love is what it's all about. And as that resonates with Brooke and Lucas, we... FADE OUT END OF ACT FOUR |

It’s been a while. I hope you’re all well. We are. It feels strange not to be on the air right now. After five years, your life kind of falls into a rhythm with the airdate schedule. In terms of production, it’s pretty much business as usual. But not airing in the Fall is…different. Especially when you have a GREAT show. And we do. You know we’re jumping ahead four years. I’m sure there have been photos and script pages and reports from the front. I’ve certainly noticed a lot more faces in Wilmington. But it’s all out of context until you see the show. I understand that. (And FYI, Kevin did a great job, but he was never offered a series regular position. His role is small and contained. He was a joy to work with. I don’t know who those knuckleheads at TV Guide are talking to. I love Damian Holbrook, though. Nice guy…) The first few episodes are complete. Locked. I suppose I might change some music if I find something I love before we air, but know this: The show is different, but it’s very much the same. And I mean that in a good way. I’ve gotten a bunch of e-mails and phone calls from people at the studio and network who are in love with Season Five. I just thought you’d like to know that. I’m writing an episode right now and listening to an advance of the new Jimmy Eat World disc. I’m happy to be back – even though for you – we’re not exactly back yet. I’m proud of the work the cast and crew and writers are doing. I appreciate the fans who have been there from the beginning. And the ones that found us along the way and stuck around. Here’s something every music fan should do: Create a new folder on your iTunes and fill it with 100 of your favorite songs. Make sure to put songs in there that you haven’t heard in a while. Stuff you used to love. And your favorite songs right now. Name the folder. (For what it’s worth, my folder is called 101 Songs To Save Your Life. It has 101 songs. I couldn’t follow my own rules…) Then put your iPod or iTunes on SHUFFLE. It’s like listening to a radio station that only plays your favorite songs. It’s familiar. Like an old friend you’re thrilled to see again. But it also surprises you once in a while. You don’t quite know what’s coming next, but you’re expectant and hopeful. And I guess that brings us full circle to Season Five. Hope it delivers the things you love about the show. But I hope it still surprises you, too. I’ll make sure to give you a shout more often as we work our way toward Episode 100 and beyond. Make that folder. And don’t forget to be great. Because you are. All good things… Mark |

I've only read a small premise of the season's opener. Interesting how they'll resume 4 years after, which I'm glad about because continuing on the freshmen years of college would have been a runaway cliché.
