Post October Road Ratings Thread #1

in this thread I will post all ratings from the October Road episodes

***********

Episode 1.01

"October Road" got a strong start on its journey following "Grey's Anatomy," leading ABC to a primetime win Thursday, while the premieres of NBC's "Andy Barker, PI" and "Raines" failed to impress.

Meanwhile, the Fox quiz show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" was greatly diminished from its earlier run following "American Idol," but still won its 8 p.m. time period against
NCAA basketball, a new "Ugly Betty" and a renovated "Office."

"October Road," about a successful author's return to the small New England town and the friends he abandoned a decade earlier, averaged 14.3 million viewers and a 5.8 rating/16 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates released Friday by Nielsen Media Research.

At 9:30 p.m., the
Andy Richter comedy "Andy Barker, PI" posted a 5.4 million, 2.4/6, while the
Jeff Goldblum cop drama "Raines" pulled a 10.3 million, 2.9/8 in the 10 p.m. hour.

"Andy Barker" tied with a repeat of Fox's "Family Guy" (5.4 million, 2.4/6) for fourth place in the time period. It lost steam from its lead-in, a new "Scrubs" (6.4 million, 2.8/7). "Raines" was in third place at 10 p.m. against "October Road" and the opening round of NCAA men's basketball.

"5th Grader" (12.2 million, 4.5/13) won at 8 p.m. in viewers and adults 18-49 although it was nothing near the sky-high opening weeks when it followed "American Idol." But it still beat "Ugly Betty" (10.8 million, 3.4/10) as well as an hourlong "The Office" (6.6 million, 2.8/8) that was mostly a repeat with some previously unaired material.

"Grey's Anatomy" (22.4 million, 8.8/22) won its 9 p.m. time period and was the night's top show in viewership and adults 18-49.

Early-round telecasts of CBS's "March Madness" averaged an estimated 9.6 million viewers.

Nightly averages: ABC (15.8 million, 6.0/16); CBS (9.6 million, 3.5/9); NBC (7.7 million, 2.7/7); Fox (9 million, 3.5/9); and The CW (4.1 million, 1.7/5).

Episode 1.02

The second outing of “October Road,” ABC’s new drama in the post-“Grey’s Anatomy” slot, saw mixed results last night. On the one hand, the show was down 16 percent from last week’s strong debut and lost nearly half “Grey’s” lead-in.

On the other hand, it was still well ahead of where “Men in Trees” had been tracking in the same timeslot.

“Road” averaged a 4.9 in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen overnights, down from last week’s 5.8. It held on to 56 percent of the 8.7 averaged by “Grey’s” at 9 p.m., and it won its timeslot handily over NBC’s “Raines” and CBS’s NCAA basketball coverage.

And “Road” was also roughly a point ahead of “Men’s” recent average in the timeslot. The question for ABC is whether the show will continue to sink or whether it will level off. Last night’s episode once again dipped during its second half hour, from a 5.5 to a 4.3, which is never a good sign but isn’t unexpected when a show has a huge lead-in.

While “Men,” which was renewed earlier this week for a second season, lost more than half its lead-in, the show has grown slightly since it took over the 10 p.m. timeslot earlier this season. Meanwhile, “Six Degrees,” the show that began the year in the timeslot, fell almost every week.

ABC still has a few weeks to see how “Road” fares before “Men” returns. Next week it will face CBS’s “Shark” for the first time. That show, which usually wins the timeslot in total viewers, has been off the air for NCAA basketball.

Elsewhere last night, Fox’s “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” dipped to a series-low 3.6 at 8 p.m., down 20 percent from last week’s 4.5 and barely winning the timeslot.

And ABC’s “Ugly Betty” fell to a series-low 3.2 two days after being picked up for a second season.

ABC finished first last night among 18-49s with a 5.6 average rating and a 16 share. CBS was second at 3.9/11, Fox third at 2.8/8, NBC fourth at 2.5/7, Univision fifth at 1.6/5 and CW sixth at 1.5/4.

Numbers for CBS are approximate as it carried live game coverage. Overnights measure timeslot and not actual program data.

Fox led the 8 p.m. hour with a 3.6 for “Smarter,” followed closely by CBS with a 3.5 for coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament. ABC was third that hour with a 3.2 for “Ugly Betty,” NBC fourth with a 2.5 for an hour of “My Name is Earl” repeats and Univision and CW tied for fifth at 1.7, Univision for “La Fea Mas Bella” and CW for “Smallville.”

ABC led with an 8.7 rating for “Grey’s Anatomy” at 9 p.m., easily the night’s top-rated show. CBS was second again that hour with a 4.2 for basketball, NBC third with a 2.5 average for “Scrubs” (2.9) and “Andy Barker, P.I.” (2.2), and Fox fourth with a 2.0 for repeats of “Family Guy” and “American Dad.” Univision was fifth with a 1.6 for “Mundo de Fieras” and CW slipped to sixth with a 1.4 for “Supernatural.”

At 10 p.m. ABC led with a 4.9 for “October Road,” followed by CBS with a 3.9 for more basketball. NBC was third that hour with a 2.5 for “Raines,” down from a 2.9 for last week’s premiere, and Univision fourth with a 1.5 for “Aqui y Ahora.”

Among households, ABC led the night comfortably with a 10.0 average rating and 16 share. CBS was second at 6.9/11, Fox third at 4.7/8, NBC fourth at 4.6/8, CW fifth at 2.4/4 and Univision sixth at 2.2/4.

Versus its most recent repeat airing, "Grey's Anatomy" grew its delivery by 1.0 million viewers and by 20% in Adults 18-49 (8.4 million & 3.0/7 on 3/8/07).

"October Road" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

Despite CBS' lead-in advantage coming into the hour from a first-run "C.S.I.," ABC's "October Road" built on its lead-in to win its hour in Adults 18-34 and beat CBS' original "Shark" by 19% (3.7/12 vs. 3.1/10). "October Road" also ranked No. 1 in its time slot with Women 18-49 (5.3/14) and Women 18-34 (5.6/16). In fact, the new ABC drama was the No. 2 TV show on Thursday night with Women 18-34, behind only CBS' original airing of the veteran "C.S.I."

"October Road" built on its lead-in among Adults 18-34 (3.7/12 vs. 3.5/11) and Women 18-34 (5.6/16 vs. 5.4/15). The new series held 97% of its Adult 18-49 lead-in (3.5/10 vs. 3.6/10).

Versus the same night last year (3/30/06), "October Road" improved the time period for ABC by 1.8 million viewers (8.3 million vs. 6.5 million) and by 30% in Adults 18-49 (3.5/10 vs. 2.7/7).

Episode 1.04
Fast National ratings for Thursday, April 5, 2007

With ABC's big guns resting Thursday night, CBS picked up a dominant ratings win on the backs of its two drama series.

CBS averaged a 10.3 rating/17 share for the night, doubling up on second-place ABC's 5.1/9. FOX took third with a 4.5/8. NBC, 3.3/6, was fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.5/2.

The adults 18-49 demographic held a similar story, with CBS' 4.9 rating leading the way. FOX grabbed second in key measure for advertisers with a 2.8, topping ABC's 2.5 and NBC's 2.4. The CW could muster only a 0.9.

"Survivor: Fiji" led off the night for CBS with a 7.9/14 at 8 p.m. "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader?" earned a 6.0/10 for FOX. ABC's "Ugly Betty" repeat was third in households, but NBC's super-sized "Office" and "30 Rock" (which averaged 4.1/7) delivered a few more viewers. A "Smallville" rerun on The CW pulled down a 1.7/3.

At 9 p.m., "CSI" drew the night's biggest audience, scoring a 12.9/21 for CBS. ABC moved up to second with a "Grey's Anatomy" rerun, 5.8/9. The conclusion of "30 Rock," "Scrubs" and a few minutes of "Andy Barker, P.I." combined for a 3.3/5 on NBC. A pair of "Family Guy" reruns on FOX scored a 2.9/5. The CW went with a "Supernatural" rerun.

"Shark" finished off the CBS sweep of the night with a 9.9/17 at 10 p.m. ABC got a 5.2/9 from "October Road," while "Andy Barker" and a "My Name Is Earl" rerun posted a 2.6/5 for NBC.

Note: The fast national results for Thursday will be posted at PIFeedback.com by 12 p.m. ET. Go to the website, click on Ratings Box (the first category), then Last Night’s Results, and Thursday, April 19, 2007. The listing of winners and losers will also be posted at PIFeedback.com.

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by Grey’s Anatomy (which faced a repeat of CSI), ABC took top-rated honors on this third Thursday in April, with an advantage over CBS of seven percent in the metered markets. NBC was third, one-tenth of a rating point ahead of Fox, with The CW, of course, fifth.

CBS’ Survivor: Fiji won the 8 p.m. hour, with a 7.8 rating/13 share in the overnights. But one year earlier, Survivor: Panama’s performance in the metered markets (on April 20, 2006) was a considerably heftier 9.9/16. Is there anything that Survivor can do to stop the bleeding? Second behind Survivor: Fiji was ABC’s Ugly Betty at a below-average 7.6/12, followed by Fox’s durable Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader (6.6/11), NBC’s My Name Is Earl (4.7/ 8) and a repeat of The Office (4.2/ 7), and The CW’s Smallville (3.2/ 5).

Both Ugly Betty and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader (a must see show for my two older kids) remain vast improvements in the time period over one year earlier. Take a look:

Thursday 8-9 p.m.

ABC
4/20/06 – American Inventor: 4.7/ 8
4/19/07 – Ugly Betty: 7.6/12
Percent Change: +62

Fox
4/20/06 – Two repeat episodes of That ‘70s Show: avg. 3.1/ 5
4/19/07 – Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader: 6.6/11
Percent Change: +113

For more on My Name Is Earl, meanwhile, see TV Tidbits below.

ABC roared past the competition from 9-10 p.m., with Grey’s Anatomy at a 14.3/22 -- up 88 percent from lead-in Ugly Betty. Comparably, Grey’s Anatomy outdelivered an encore telecast of CBS’ CSI (#2, 8.9/14) by 61 percent.

Third in the 9 p.m. hour were NBC comedies 30 Rock and Scrubs, each with a 3.5/ 5, followed by a repeat of Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy on Fox (3.1/ 5), and Supernatural on The CW (2.5/ 4). Although NBC has already renewed 30 Rock, isn’t it time already to dump Scrubs (which could end up on ABC)?

In a positive development for CBS at 10 p.m., not only did Shark win the hour with a 9.6/16, it built from the repeat of lead-in CSI by eight percent. That has never happened before. NBC’s veteran ER continues to trend downward (despite building from Scrubs) with a distant 6.8/11. Please NBC -- end ER now and let it depart while it still has some dignity. Third in the overnights was ABC’s October Road, with a 6.4/11. Although that was, comparatively, a loss 55 percent out of Grey’s Anatomy (too much to warrant renewal), it may not be third among adults 18-49 once the fast nationals are posted at PIFeedback.

-Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats):

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC and CBS kicked-off the May 2007 sweeps on a winning note, with CBS first in total viewers (3.14 million viewers above ABC), and the alphabet net No. 1 among adults 18-49. NBC and Fox shared the No. three and four spots (Fox was third in total viewers; NBC third among adults 18-49), followed by iffy The CW.

CBS’ Survivor: Fiji opened the evening on a winning note, with 13.82 million viewers and a 4.5 rating/13 share among adults 18-49. But one year earlier (and without Ugly Betty and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader in the competitive mix), Survivor: Panama averaged a considerably heftier 17.90 million viewers and a 5.9/18 in the demo, based on the final nationals. Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader finished second in total viewers (9.99 million), and third among adults 18-49 (3.4/10). Comparably, take a look at the Jeff Foxworthy hosted game show versus two episodes of That ‘70s Show on the year-ago evening (April 27, 2006).

Fox/Thursday 8-9 p.m.
4/27/07 That ‘70s Show (two episodes)
Viewers: 4.98 million (#4), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#3)*
(based on the final nationals)

4/26/07 – Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader
Viewers: 9.99 million (#2), A18-49: 3.4/10 (#2)
Percent Change – Viewers: +101, A18-49: +55

Expect a renewal for next season any day now for Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader.

ABC’s competing Ugly Betty (Viewers: #3, 9.56 million; A18-49: #4, 3.1/ 9) remains a vast improvement over year-ago occupant American Inventor (Viewers: #3, 5.01 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 5 on April 27, 2006, based on the final nationals). But the comedic Betty continues to lose steam as the season progresses. Has the novelty worn off?

Rounding off the 8 p.m. hour were NBC sitcoms My Name Is Earl (Viewers: #3, 7.56 million; A18-49: #2, 3.2/10) and The Office (Viewers: #4, 7.48 million; A18-49: #2t, 3.9/11), and Smallville on The CW (Viewers: #5, 3.93 million; A18-49: #5, 1.5/ 4). Growth for The Office out of My Name Is Earl of 22 percent among adults 18-49 is worth positive noting.

ABC and CBS shared dominance at 9 p.m. as follows:

Thursday 9 p.m.
Grey’s Anatomy (ABC)
Viewers: 19.75 million (#2), A18-49: 8.2/21 (#1)

CSI (CBS)
Viewers: 19.99 million (#1), A18-49: 5.8/15 (#2)

While you certainly cannot knock 20 million viewers, the year-ago telecast of CSI (without Grey’s Anatomy in the competitive mix, and also based on the final nationals) averaged 27.36 million viewers and an 8.7/22 in the demo. Should CBS be considered?

Elsewhere, the season-finale of NBC’s 30 Rock sunk to just 4.82 million viewers (#4) and a 2.4/ 6 among adults 18-49, with losses from lead-in The Office of a considerable 2.66 million viewers and 38 percent among adults 18-49. That led into Scrubs, which averaged an also disappointing 4.68 million viewers and a 2.3/ 6 in the demo at 9:30 p.m. Are you really think about renewing Scrubs -- again -- NBC?

Also in the 9 p.m. hour was an original installment of Fox’s Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy (Viewers: #3, 5.26 million; A18-49: #4, 2.1/ 5), and The CW’s Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 3.34 million; A18-49: #5, 1.4/ 3). Although Trading Spouses was, of course, a much bigger draw, retention out of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader of just 53 percent in viewers and 62 percent among adults 18-49 lands it in the loser’s circle. Supernatural’s retention out of Smallville was considerably stronger at 85 percent in viewers and 93 percent among adults 18-49.

CBS’ sure-to-be renewed Shark was the most-watched show at 10 p.m., while ABC’s October Road was first among adults 18-49 (despite losing more than half the audience of lead-in Grey’s Anatomy). NBC’s ER, meanwhile, continues to build from Scrubs by double-digits, but the veteran medical drama remains a shell of its former self. Take a look:

Thursday 10 p.m.
Shark (CBS)
Viewers: 14.25 million (#1), A18-49: 3.9/11 (#2)

ER (NBC)
Viewers: 9.39 million (#2), A18-49: 3.7/10 (#3)

October Road (ABC)
Viewers: 9.35 million (#3), A18-49: 4.2/12 (#1)
