Some of that stuff is just insane to see. Like the snow leopard hunt that took some ungodly amount of time to capture, and all the birds of paradise (dances!!) are always amazing. I recommend the Blue Planet also. It's also made by the BBC people and documents life underwater from the polar waters to seasonal seas to the deep, etc. The cameras and appurtenant deep sea equipment they use to film miles below the sea level is crazy. ![]() |

I've always shown love for the BBC, it's probably the best "public" broadcasting network. There's a great podcast from BBC Radio called "In our Time". Topics are usually high-brow (or at least are dealt with in a high-brow manner): Theory, the Classics, Literature, Religion, Science etc. No current events. Recent shows have been about "Symmetry," Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," the Opium Wars, Borges, and "Hell." Great show. Plus they are always correct when it comes to documentaries. I need things like this to reaffirm my faith in life while my faith in humanity steadily declines.I think that's why I like this stuff so much. I go through life seeing a lot of the same things during my days (office, driving, home, sex, jazz) and end up taking them for granted. When you see all this incredible stuff that exists all around us, it just makes you appreciate things more. Just like 'Winged Migration'... the ability to see the places that these birds see while in flight was awesome, places that I'd absolutely never see otherwise (especially from that vantage point). It's just really cool stuff that always puts me in a good mood. ![]() Last edited by Captain Beefheart : 01-12-2008 at 06:59 PM. |

At the end of every episode their is a "diary" section where they show how they captured the material.. Wait for the part where theirs two birds.....Definately the most impressive mating dance EVER. ![]() |

| il dolce far niente ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | You actually pay your license fee wow? You donation is appreciated. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who does that before. It's enough to save a dozen of ethiopian children every year. Or, in other words, nearly two trips to the opera if you’re happy to sit miles away! Last edited by Moshe.. : 01-15-2008 at 01:51 PM. |

I know those so called detector vans are bogus but they do issue demands for payment to every household that doesn't register... on the assumption that everyone has a tv so everyone should have a licence. |

| il dolce far niente ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | They don’t pay as a matter of principle. It’s a bit sad and pathetic actually. That’s my parents for you. My unreconstructed red-brigade dad delights in those kind of self-serving little acts of rebellion. The proudest moment of his teenage life was being arrested at some idiot communist rally nobody will ever remember. I think the main thing they wanted was free bus journeys. The slogans went something like ‘stop transportation totalitarianism’. We didn’t have a tv for years and I suppose they never noticed when parents eventually caved in and put the aerial up. The interesting thing is my brother hasn’t got a tv and they do knock on his door every year. The license people are very incredulous and sceptical so he tried to show them around to prove it (i.e. look how many books I have!) and they actually said they weren’t allowed to go inside people houses. I thought that statement was too hilarious. Since you pay you must already be on their list. But remember the bbc have a special sex fetish for political correctness. Phone them up and say you’ve converted to islam and find television both sinful and racially offensive and they’ll let you off no problem, and probably send you some form of government subsidy to pay for belly dancing manuals. I’m going to get you into so much trouble! But honestly I want to learn belly dancing. |

But the fact your parents get away with not paying doesn't surprise me, there's never any justice regarding who can and can't afford to pay their way. Similarly my father has got away with not paying for at least 2 speeding fines that I know of. Belly dancing, yes, I always thought that would be my calling... I have the hips for it. |

| Mu nótahu ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I thought the BBC was state funded, or in other words they would tax you discretly without actually showing up at your door like evangelicals. Do they have evangelical megachurches in England too? HA! A while ago I seem to remember lawmakers were attempting to get laws passed that let you just pick the cable channels you want as opposed to getting the packages where there's a bunch of garbage bundled in there that you don't watch. Guess who has lobbied against picking them? The religious right. Why? Cause they think that everyone would choose against getting the religious networks and thus, their fundraising would go down. I'm sure there are people that end up on those channels and their catholic upbringing taps them on the shoulder and says "Give money or find yourself in hell". It's all about guilt, and the promise of being saved. HAHAH. The only two "public" broadcasting networks I've been exposed are PBS(american), decent programming and sometimes they offer sum of the documentaries and shows on DVD, sort of like sending you to Mexico for 6 days, 7 nights and then hoaxing ya with timeshares. TVE(spanish) it's free but it's spiral into such mediocrety that TVE2 is the only viable option. Say if you were given the opportunity to purchase your television stations ala carte, which ones would you buy? I'd probably just get HBO, any network where you only need 15 seconds to be nominated for an Emmy seems like a winner to me. ![]() Last edited by Captain Beefheart : 01-15-2008 at 08:37 PM. |

At least we don't have those fanatical religious networks or any religious networks at all. And the best programmes are on the Beeb, along with Channel 4. Do you guys get any shows from that network? |

| il dolce far niente ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | yes exactly! You should see the sinister television adverts they do about what happens when you don't pay the fee. They make up this ridiculous story about how they have special technology that can tell whenever someone is using a tv without a license. Like a swat team instantly descends on the house. It's such a farce. They just built a new hq off regent's park. And they wanted to decorate the foyer to make it look trendy so they spent $10 million buying all this weird conceptual art. Well at least we know our money is in safe hands. |
