The Game Comedy ![]() Premise: In this spin-off of "Girlfriends," a woman is about to learn the realities of dating a pro football player, the glitz and the disadvantages. First Impressions: It comes from the "Girlfriends" creative team and, like that show, revolves around a group of women, so you already know a fair amount about what you're going to get. Which is a little bit of broad humor, some occasionally sharp writing and characters who don't suffer fools easily. The pilot pulled decent ratings when it aired as an episode of "Girlfriends" in April, and paired with its parent show next season there's no reason to think they won't be compatible. Stars: Aldis Hodge ("American Dreamz"), Coby Bell ("Third Watch"), Tia Mowry ("Sister, Sister"), Hosea Chanchez ("Everwood"), Wendy Raquel Robinson ("Something New") Studio: CBS Paramount Network Television Producers: Kelsey Grammer ("Medium"), Mara Brock-Akil ("Girlfriends"), Steve Stark ("Medium") 2. Runaway Drama ![]() Premise: A man wrongfully accused of murder packs up his family and moves them to Iowa under assumed names. Things become dangerous, though, when both the law and the real killer begin sniffing around. First Impressions: This mashup of family drama and crime thriller could work, provided that its creators keep a balance between the two elements and don't stretch our credulity too far with reasons to keep the fugitive clan on the run. Donnie Wahlberg and Leslie Hope are both underrated actors, and the central father-son relationship looks like it's handled pretty well too. We'll be lamenting "Everwood" for a while, but The CW could have done far worse with its de facto replacement. Stars: Donnie Wahlberg ("Boomtown"), Leslie Hope ("24"), Dustin Milligan ("The Butterfly Effect 2"), Sarah Ramos ("American Dreams"), Nathan Gamble, Susan Floyd, Karen LeBlanc Studio: Sony Pictures Television Producers: Darren Star ("Sex and the City"), Ed Zuckerman ("Law & Order") 3. Hidden Palms Mid Season Drama Premise: Think "The O.C." in Palm Springs, as a teen coping with his father's death begins to slowly notice the secrets held by the people in his outwardly flawless neighborhood. First Impressions: It's premature to say so definitively, but the first look at "Hidden Palms" hints that maybe, just maybe, writer Kevin Williamson is back on his game. The setting is a fresh one, which is never bad, and the "Dawson's Creek" creator has blended two things -- teen soap and mystery -- he's done well before to create this show. Keeping both parts of the equation in line could be tricky, though. Stars: Michael Cassidy ("The O.C."), Taylor Handley ("The O.C."), Amber Heard ("The O.C."), Sharon Lawrence ("NYPD Blue"), Gail O'Grady ("American Dreams"), Ellary Porterfield ("The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio"), D.W. Moffet ("Thirteen") Studio: Lionsgate Television Producers: Kevin Williamson ("Dawson's Creek"), Scott Winant ("Huff") |

That they're cast the biggest villain in the O.C. (Oliver) as the main lead and the most sickly sweet O.C. character (Zach) as the bad guy is really kind of a masterspoke, even if it ram home what an O.C. rip off it is. Still, it was pretty good and I think I'll give it a chance when it starts midseason. |

It sounds good but doesn't make me want to count down the days until it premieres, none of them do. I can't see the CW network doing all that good if these are the kind of shows they plan on bringing in. But then again, I never watched the UPN or WB's TV shows. |
