the simpsons, greatest show of all time?

if the simpsons end up becoming the longest running prime time series of all time, do you think it will earn the same amount of respect as if it was done by a show such as friends?

The Simpsons will be considered one of the best, if it is not already.

However, yeah, it is easier for an animated show to stay around than a live action show. There are so many other ways to do it, so many different directions to take it.

I think it has potential to be the greatest show of all time. It's been on for so long, the characters (the SImpsons at least) are very recognizable, the have a HUGE following, and I'm assuming rating are always great for it.

it's easy to find people that doesn't watch friends but it's extremely hard to find people that doesn't watch simpsons...even most of my friend's parent watches it!!! teachers too [img]smile.gif[/img]

No, it never was and never will be the greatest show of all time.

Maybe, if it would have stopped 3/4 years ago I would put more thought into it but since it's been kinda stale the last few years it's not in contention anymore.

Hell, I dont even consider it in the top 5 cartoons of all time.

And I dont think The Simpsons can get anymore respect...it's above anything currently on TV right now.

I don't know The Simpsons rating have been dropping the last couple of years. Its a great show but they are loosing their grip.

It may be the best animated series ever but not the best show.

The best show on T.V. (to me) is 24.

Not to mention that the characters never get older or change. I think that has a lot to do with it...there's less chance of fans getting alienated by change on an animated show.

Also the fact that ego's of actors don't really get in the way. Sure there are voice actors, but they're not really celebrities, except maybe to die hard Simpsons fans. They don't have the kinds of opportunities in movies and to have their own shows like actors on Friends.

The Simpsons will never be appreciated by the masses like Friends is because Friends is simple and mainly consists of love stories. The Simpsons has a lot more going on that wouldn't (or couldn't) appeal to all people.

I think in the end, those that know better would say that The Simpsons is clearly a better show than Friends....or most other shows for that matter. It's hard to say anything is the best of all time though.

Simpsons is perhaps the most popular cartoon of all time. The characters are recognized world wide, especially in Western Europe and North America. They're also the longest running animated series ever.

It isn't an exaggeration to say that The Simpsons are an important part of western culture.

BoredJen brings up some good points. The people who like the Simpsons end up really liking it. It often has sophisticated jokes, but anyone can still enjoy it.

The last couple of seasons have been pretty lame for the series. I don't think that the Simpsons are the "greatest" show ever. For the quality per episode I'd have to say Faulty Towers.

That's because they can relate to Homer or Marge...that they actually ARE Homer or Marge!
The beauty of the show is if you watch it with kids and parents, you'll know they all love it but on different levels.

(That little growling moan Marge does; all mothers know where that stems from.
And as for Homer; there's a part of every father that is Homer).
