| NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - "The Shield" has four episodes remaining in its fourth season, but the gritty police drama already is a lock to return for a fifth year on FX. An announcement from the cable channel of a 13-episode pickup for a fifth season is imminent, sources said. FX reps declined comment on the matter late Wednesday. For "Shield" creator/executive producer Shawn Ryan, FX's vote of confidence comes on the heels of CBS' pickup of "The Unit," a drama about an elite Special Ops unit that Ryan is executive producing alongside playwright David Mamet. "Shield" is having a strong fourth year, rebounding from the *** it took in Season 3. So far this season, "Shield" is averaging 3.2 million viewers in the Tuesday 10 p.m. slot, up from its third-season average of 2.5 million viewers. In adults 18-49, "Shield" so far has averaged 2 million viewers, compared with an average of 1.7 million last year. The drama on "Shield" has gotten a boost this season from the introduction of Glenn Close as tough-as-nails police Capt. Monica Rawling, who has tangled with rogue cop Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis). Close will not be back for the fifth season; sources said the actress made it clear to producers from the beginning that she could commit to only one season. "Shield" put FX on the map as a haven for envelope-pushing dramas with its intensity and its warts-and-all depiction of how police officers and detectives survive in the urban jungle. Chiklis earned an Emmy for his work on the show. The pickup of "Shield" also gives FX the comfort of having an established show to bank on just as the basic cabler is poised to unveil a number of new series, including "Over There" -- a drama set against the backdrop of the war in Iraq -- and "Thief," starring Andre Braugher. "Shield" is set to wrap its season June 14; next week's episode will be a 90-minute installment. |
