The whold point of the series is Destiny. Everyone that was going to be on the Plane(Even before it Crashed) the day it crashed where all suppose to end up on the Island for a Reason. Each person is suppose to learn something from the Island plus use their indiviual traits/skills on the Island. The Island has been doing this for Centuries.

That is what I have been able to figure out from watching the show.
