NBC’s OFFICE Writers Are Writing "GHOSTBUSTERS 3"!

Sony has hired Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, Emmy-nominated writer-producers on the Steve Carell version of "The Office," to script a "Ghostbusters" sequel that would reunite Venkman, Stanz, Spengler and Zeddemore.

Harold Ramis, who co-wrote the earlier "Ghostbusters" movies and portrayed mold fetishist Egon Spengler in those comedies, is in post-production on next summer's Jack Black period comedy "Year One," which was directed by Ramis from a screenplay by Ramis, Eisenberg and Stupnitsky.

Ramis directed three season-three episodes of "The Office," namely "A Benihana Christmas," "Safety Training" and "Beach Games."

"Office" episodes scripted by Eisenberg and Stupnitsky include "The Fight," "The Secret," "The Convention," "Women's Appreciation," "Dinner Party" and "Job Fair."

Columbia Pictures has set "The Office" co-executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a "Ghostbusters" film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

Eisenberg and Stupnitsky just wrote The Year One, a comedy that was directed by Ramis. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the films. Ivan Reitman directed both the 1984 original and the sequel that was released in 1989.

Ghostbusters was Columbia's highest grossing film ever, until it was beaten by Men in Black and then Spider-Man. An attempt to make a third installment of the franchise was stymied in the dealmaking stage.

No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready.

In the wake of Ghostbuster 3 rumors with Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow attached, Columbia Pictures announced today that they have enlisted Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (exec producers on The Office) to write the next installment.

The plan is to whip up a new supernatural adventure roping together original Ghostbusters Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

According to Variety, Eisenberg and Stupnitsky penned Harold Rami's latest comedy Year One. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the Ghostbusters films.

The trade was keen to note that original cast members are not officially locked until a script has been turned in and salaries are discussed. No word yet on whether director Ivan Reitman will come back.

it's weird. this morning on good morning america they confirmed that all of the original ghostbusters are coming back but that there is no release date set yet. i'm still waiting for the ghostbusters video game.

Last week, it was announced that "The Office" co-executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were hired by Columbia Pictures to write a script for Ghostbusters 3, but the question remained whether Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson will be back.

Chicago Tribune's Pop Machine received an e-mail from Ramis explaining the situation:

"yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my [Year One] writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing [Year One] and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.

Who do you think should be the new Ghostbusters?

i keep thinking some of the guys from the movies like "superbad" and such would fit within the ghost buster's world. jack black could be funny, maybe even ben stiller. but the movie has to involve the originals to a very large capacity.
