Plot Summary:
"The Incredible Hulk" kicks off an all-new, explosive and action-packed epic of one of the most popular superheroes of all time. In this new beginning, scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) desperately hunts for a cure to the gamma radiation that poisoned his cells and unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk.

Scene with Bruce's Eyes turning Green:
"You’ll see Bruce Banner transform in minute three. (Laughs) Minute three! That’s what’s good about it and it was really important when I was accepting the movie. We're not treating it as an origin movie but: Bruce Banner stepping into his chair and the gamma bomb and everything. He’s the Hulk already, with the Hulk within him, and you get to understand how he came to be in this situation, his struggle in life, the other characters surrounding him and the enemies that he deals with and fights with."

Scene where Bruce is Meditating:
"That’s how he tries to control the beast within: breathing exercises, Brazilian jujitsu, stuff like that. We pick him up in the movie when he’s in Brazil and he’s trying to keep the monsters at bay, literally. Both the monster inside and the army chasing after him to harness his monster — to create a supersoldier. So he uses Brazilian jujitsu and yoga and meditation techniques to keep the monster inside of him, And, also, if someone picks a fight with him, he’s using that Brazilian jujitsu because jujitsu and aikido are more elusive martial arts — he’s deflecting the blows so he can run away and not get involved. He’s not a superhero, he’s not Jason Bourne. He’s the anti-James Bond, the anti-Jason Bourne. He’s really the guy that doesn’t want the fight. Unfortunately, as you can see from the teaser, he sucks at avoiding it!"

Scene where the guy is being thrown from the darkness through walls:
"This is the first big Hulk-out and it’s guys picking a fight with Banner and cornering him. We’ve got this huge action sequence in a bottling factory, which has got everything a good fight needs: soda, glass and big metal tanks. (Laughs) No, it’s cool. It’s really like Ghost And The Darkness, the feel, where you only glimpse Hulk and it’s really scary. Like Alien, where you think you’re seeing the Hulk but it’s not the Hulk — it’s a tank. You think you’re seeing a tank and it’s Hulk. I mean, there are some nice, interesting things. It was a nice test to start the visual effects with this scene — to get a beautiful silhouette of the Hulk and beautiful textures for his skin, things like that."

On General Ross:
"General Ross (William Hurt) has a great line in the movie: “Banner was an accident and something went really wrong — or really right.” He loves that thing and he wants to control it, to harvest it. He has another speech where he talks about the splitting of the atom: fire, the universe opens and there is a new force — and somebody has to step up to the plate and not cower away from this thing but grab it. He’s the Ahab of this story, this alienated guy craving that power. He’s alienated himself from the army and his family, because he’s obsessing about only one thing: the Hulk, the Hulk, the Hulk."

On Tim Ross as Emil Blonsky:
"Tim Roth is Emil Blonsky, who becomes Abomination. He’s an ace, but he’s an ace that is kind of over the hill. I really wanted to work with Tim Roth; he’s an amazing actor and he’s extraordinary on the screen. When I met Tim I was like, “God!” He was so good and had so much energy that I said, “Blomsky must be Tim Roth.” I had to push — Marvel, Edward, everybody was hesitant to get Tim, but he really added a new dimension to the character. He is the opposite of Bruce Banner — he’s a fighter, he’s a machine, he’s a very effective, cool-as-a-cucumber soldier that is over the hill – 38, 39 years old – has finished his life as a soldier, should be a Colonel by now and has never accepted that failure. He loves being a fighter, loves being on the field."

On Abomination's Film Appearance compared to Comic Appearance:
"I really wanted to justify [Abomination’s] appearance. I really wanted to wrap my head around the original scaley-with-big-ears monster that was in the comic book, but I couldn’t justify it. The guy isn’t crossed with a fish; he’s not crossed with a lizard. Just like the Hulk he’s an über-human — his body, everything, grows out. And the way he gets injected with the serum, he’s shot in the skin and the muscles, and shot inside the spine. That makes his bones grow thicker and bigger and longer, making him a super-weapon. So he’s got that spine that flares out, which becomes a weapon. He’s got elbows that stick out and become these martial arts, Chinese knives — things that can slash back and forth. He’s got this tongue thing and the heel-spikes… so he’s a killing machine. It’s pretty cool, it’s funny. He’s got bones sticking out, so it becomes like an exo-skeleton which he uses as armour..."

"...What might throw you off [about Abomination’s colour] in the trailer is that there’s fire. Since there are lots of layers of skin and he’s kind of transparent, he reflects whatever’s around him. Since both he and Hulk are gamma monsters, they both have to be gamma green. He’s brand-new, he’s a new monster, so he’s unstable and not perfectly green, but he’s still very green. If you look at him in broad daylight, he looks like the animation from the comic book, that darker, deeper green. If I were to show you a picture of the Hulk in that street at the end, when they’re running at each other, there’s so much fire around them that he looks like an orange monster. But he’s not an orange monster — he’s green."

On the Teaser being Released Late:
"[We released the trailer quite late because] no shots are finished yet. That’s why we took so long to release the teaser, because unlike the other movies coming out this summer, our main character relies on so much calculation and technique. None of the shots in this trailer are finished shots, but I think it’s decent enough and it shows the audience what we’re going for. There’s a different version of the teaser that will only be shown in movie theatres where you see a close-up of the Hulk’s face as he comes out of the darkness and cries to [Betty]. A full close-up, like full-screen. And until we had that shot right I didn’t want to release it. That’s why it took so long for us…I never saw that Superbowl spot [that drew criticism of Ang Lee’s film for showing Hulk unfinished]. I’ve asked for it and they’ve said, “No, no, you don’t want to see that.” (Laughs) Anyway, I would have never allowed anything to come out that I wasn’t happy with."

On the Final Scene in the Teaser(Hulk & Abomination Running toward each other):
"This sequence is toward the end of the movie. But our final scene, our final battle – unlike a normal movie where the final fight scene is six minutes long, ours is 26 minutes long! So you get 26 minutes of two monsters pummelling each other through New York City, jumping up and down, ripping helicopters from the sky and stuff. You know, lots of green blood on the street, splashed all around. So it’s pretty cool. For me it was one of the most exciting elements of making the movie: ‘I have two monsters fighting in New York City, that’s going to be fun.’ You know, how do you come up with fun, original stuff? And you’ve seen just the beginning of the face-off, with the monsters running towards each other — BOOM! — they smash into each other, and then craziness ensues. Some humans try to get out of the way but no, they can’t… there’s a little bit of collateral damage! (Laughs) There’s a bit of a bodycount. Not on account of the Hulk — the Hulk’s a saviour — but Blomsky is ruthless."

The teaser actually looks pretty good. From the sounds of it, it looks like they're ignoring Ang Lee's film and starting over with Banner already as the Hulk, with just references to his gamma exposure.

Can't wait. This summer is gonna be great for comic book movies. You've got The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and Hellboy 2.

I don't know why people keep saying the last one was bad so they're not expecting much from this one. Everything is different here. It's not even a continuation of the last film.

"The Incredible Hulk" Updates From NYCC

Universal Pictures presented The Incredible Hulk at the New York Comic-Con today where it was revealed that Lou Ferrigno's role in the film is not just a cameo.

Director Louis Leterrier offered Ferrigno a job doing the voice of the Hulk saying "Hulk Smash!" at the panel. We're not sure if he was just joking about that, but Ferrigno is definitely involved.

They also confirmed that Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark will appear in the movie and they showed a clip of Downey Jr. walking into a seedy bar and meeting General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt) to talk about his "problem".

They also showed some clips of Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) talking to Ross about being given a "super venom" that would turn him into a "Super soldier".

They showed a bit of that process and then they showed an extended scene of Banner being chased by Ross and the army and fighting with Blonsky (in non-Abomination) form, which makes up a good part of the new trailer that will be in front of Iron Man.

"The Incredible Hulk" Smashes New York Comic-Con

The rabid audience at this year's New York Comic-Con had barely recovered from the "Hellboy II" presentation, when it was time for the highly-anticipated panel for The Incredible Hulk. Director Louis Letterier, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige, producer Gale Anne Hurd and actor Tim Roth, who plays Emil Blonsky AKA The Abomination, were on hand to talk about the movie and show some new, never-before-seen footage.

Much of the focus of the panel was to introduce the film's "kick ass villain," The Abomination, and Feige thought it was important for the Hulk to start transforming into a hero with the new movie and that the Hulk might even be an underdog against Blonsky's final incarnation. They showed a series of clips starting with one of Roth as Emil Blonsky talking to William Hurt's General Thunderbolt Ross. Ross tells Blonsky about a weapons program initiated during World War II to create a "super soldier" (a far from subtle reference to the serum responsible for creating Captain America), but Blonsky is eager to do whatever it takes to become better and more powerful, after facing the Hulk and being defeated. Ross says he can arrange Blonsky to become a test subject for the serum, and we cut to a scene of a doctor warning Blonsky that it requires two very painful injections, one into the bloodstream and one into the bone marrow. Ross says that if there are any signs of side effects they'd have to immediately stop the experiment—we all know that's not what will happen though, right?—and we then see Blonsky strapped to a hospital table facing the floor with his back exposed and the doctor starts injecting one of the shots into his back as he grimaces in pain.

The second clip shown, which probably takes place before Blonsky's conversation with Ross, was an extended scene in which Edward Norton's Bruce Banner first faces Emil Blonsky after a tussle with General Ross' army. The scene starts with Banner being chased into a glass overpass and trapped in there with military personnel on both sides, and General Ross ordering his men to launch gas grenades into the overpass, which they do. We get a brief glimpse of Liv Tyler's Betty Ross who looks pretty upset about how her father is treating her boyfriend and she starts running towards the overpass with two soldiers chasing after her. She elbows one of them in the head knocking him down but then the other soldier tackles her to the ground. They start emitting gas and Banner starts tensing up and he rips off his outer shirt to put over his mouth, but obviously, he's not in a good place. We then see the outside of the now gas-filled overpass and a hand come up and hit the glass sides, which cracks from the impact. We then see some of Banner's transformation into the Hulk, particularly his feet expanding and breaking open the sneakers. We then see the soldiers on the ground watching the overpass as the Hulk smashes out of it, leaps to the ground and snarls at Ross and the soldiers, who start firing their guns. This is a much bigger and more muscular Hulk than the first movie, and even though the visual FX weren't completely done, you can tell that this is a far more detailed monster that's taking full advantage of the motion capture and facial capture techniques being used by Letterier on the film.

Ross commands two fast-moving jeeps armed with machine guns to go after the beast, and they do so as the Hulk runs after one of them, side checks it and then picks it up and uses the jeep to knock out a wall of soldiers with guns. Ross orders Blonsky to do his thing, and Blonsky starts walking confidently towards the rampaging monster firing a large gun at him, as the Hulk takes two large pieces of scrap metal from the jeeps and uses them to stop the bullets. Blonsky then does an impressive leap over the Hulk and shows off some impressive acrobatic maneuvers as the Hulk starts swinging the giant metal slabs at the soldier. Blonsky yells out, "Is that it? Is that all you got?" as the Hulk lifts his enormous leg and kicks Blonsky full in the chest. (The clip ended there, but as we'd see in the trailer later, the result of that blow is that Blonsky is sent hurtling backwards, this humiliating defeat leading to him agreeing to be given the serum that eventually turns him into the Abomination.)

After that scene, we learned that a lot of Blonsky's stunt choreography (and stuntwork) was done by none other than Cyril Raffaelli. the star of Pierre Morel's District B13, the connection being that Morel was the DP on Letterier's previous films The Transporter and Unleashed. It was pretty obvious that Letterier and Marvel Studios had been keeping this film close to their vests because they wanted to create more of an impact at the New York Comic-Con and they immediately started fielding questions from the audience. One of the questions a lot of people have asked was whether the Hulk or Abomination would actually speak in the movie rather than just snarl at each other as monsters tend to do. Letterier remained coy in answering although he realized that having the Hulk yell "Hulk Smash!" was very important to remaining true to the comics. In fact, Feige told the audience that the comic panels Letterier had selected as visual influence for the movie that he had put up on the wall in the production offices, every single one of them had been used in the movie.

That said, the film is equally influenced by the '70s television show starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno, and the mention of the show prompted Ferrigno, a comic convention regular, to come out onto the stage to flex his muscles and say a few words about his involvement with the new movie and how excited he was to see someone giving Hulk fans what they want. Letterier said how much he hates those cheesy cameos by comic book creators in recent Marvel movies, so he decided to give Ferrigno a real role in the movie that he thought would be funnier. He then asked Ferrigno, who never spoke as the Hulk on the original live action show but provided the voice for the Hulk in the 1996 cartoon, to give the audience a sample of his "Hulk Smash!" which prompted Letterier to offer Ferrigno a job doing just that for the movie. This seemed far too staged to be an impromptu job offer, but indeed, it seems like whatever the Hulk might say in the movie, that voice will indeed be provided by Lou Ferrigno.

After taking questions from the audience, they showed the new unfinished trailer that will debut with Iron Man (Paramount/Marvel Studios) on May 2nd which incorporates a lot of the footage we had just seen of the Hulk taking on the army, as well as a great scene of the Hulk ripping a car in half. The biggest surprise was a scene afterwards that shows General Ross sitting in a seedy bar when a silhouette appears at the door and it's none other than Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. The two of them basically have a verbal exchange with Ross complimenting Stark on his suit and Stark telling Ross that he can help him with his "problem." It's unclear whether this scene will be shown as part of the official trailer and whether this scene will be something saved for after the movie's end credits, but it certainly is the first step towards the set-up for the very much anticipated "Avengers" movie that everyone has been hinting at for years.

Surely, anyone at Comic-Con who saw this presentation has little doubt that Letterier, Marvel Studios and Universal got it right this time with their relaunch of the Hulk, but after the panel, ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had a chance to speak with Letterier, Hurd and Feige about some of the influences and decisions that went into making the new movie, which you can read about below.

Following The Incredible Hulk presentation at the New York Comic-Con, ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had a chance to talk to three of the primary creators of this comic book relaunch: director Louis Letterier, producer Gale Anne Hurd, and Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige to find out first-hand some of the challenges they faced while making another Hulk movie after the somewhat poorly-received Ang Lee movie. All of our interviews were fairly brief but hopefully informative to fans of the comic books dying to know whether the new movie will deliver.

We'll start with French director Louis Letterier, who comes from the Luc Besson camp, having co-directed The Transporter and its sequel, as well as the Jet Li action-drama Unleashed in between.

ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype!: How did it happen that you ended up directing this movie?

Louis Letterier: It's crazy, right? It's because of "Unleashed" which was the quality movie and "Transporter 2" which was the Hollywood blockbuster, but I knew Marvel and I'd been talking to them for a long time, so when they offered me "Hulk,",I was like, "Really, you sure?" I was more surprised than anybody else.

CS/SHH!: Is it daunting to have to relaunch the character after Ang Lee's movie which some people liked but didn't really go over well with comic book fans?

Letterier: I liked Ang Lee's movie.

CS/SHH!: But you were put in a similar position as Christopher Nolan with "Batman Begins" where you had to start again after a less-than-favorable movie.

Letterier: Yeah, exactly, but at the same time, you have this amazing basis of comic books that you can just go through and say, "This is a great scene, this is a great image!" It's your net. It's high flying but there's a net, that's what the comic book is.

CS/SHH!: Who are some of your favorite Hulk artists? I know the movie is influenced by the TV show but Kevin mentioned you had a lot of comic book panels as inspiration, too.

Letterier: Well, I mean starting with Kirby and Stan Lee, but when they offered me "Hulk" I went to a comic book store and was looking for back issues of the Hulk and I'd seen most of them, but something that really stuck out for me was "Hulk: Gray" by Tim Sale and Jeph Loeb, and I took it and I loved it. It was amazing, so when I looked at this, I thought this was beautifully graphic, truly poetic, a simple, beautiful story for the whole family so that's what I wanted to do.

CS/SHH!: How did you work with the different writers and Marvel in terms of figuring out exactly what the story was going to be?

Letterier: They knew they wanted to revive Hulk and they wanted to use animation. The rest was for me to figure out, so starting with Zak Penn, we crafted a story, made it ours, finding different ideas from comic books and trying to compile them in one big story, and then Zak had to do his movie "The Grand" so he left and Edward who we were seeing as an actor said, "I write screenplays," so I asked if he could do the last draft and he said, "No problem."

CS/SHH!: You had Ed running around Brazil, so it seems to continue where the last movie left off, because that one left Bruce Banner in South America.

Letterier: No, not really. Not at all actually. We're starting a new franchise. Yeah, (the first movie) ended up in South America but this one doesn't start in South America. We're going to show you where the movie starts very soon. We have a little sequence that we're going to "let leak" on the internet, so you'll see where the movie starts.

CS/SHH!: I loved the fact you brought Cyril from "District B13" in on this.

Letterier: I love Cyril and he's one of the best stunt players and stunt choreographers around, so I had to bring him in, and he was actually doubling for Tim, it was pretty funny.

CS/SHH!: Where do you go from here? You can obviously go and make another "Hulk" movie if this one does well.

Letterier: I don't think I'll go right into a new "Hulk" movie, but if people like this one, I'd certainly like to do another "Hulk" movie. It was a great experience and I'd certainly like to do another one. I just don't want to do it right away.

CS/SHH!: Are there any other superheros you'd like to tackle if you get a chance?

Letterier: Maybe. I have a few in mind, superhero movies or the big manga world mostly.

Next up is Kevin Feige, Marvel Studio's President of Production, who has been heavily involved with every aspect of The Incredible Hulk and the other Marvel comic book movies currently in the works.

CS/SHH!: We know that for a long time the Marvel characters were at different studios. I'm sure you're asked this a lot, but why did Marvel Studios decided to tackle another "Hulk" movie as one of their first productions?

Kevin Feige: It would have been the first one depending on when the rights came back to us, because the Hulk is Hulk, a huge character for us, and next to Spider-Men, he's our most popular hero across the board, so it was a no-brainer to not wait more than five years to bring him back. In Louis Letterier and Edward Norton, we had a team that was assembled that could really bring it to life in a way that people are anticipating. The film definitely delivers and I'm very encouraged by the reaction we got to (the footage), it couldn't be better and it was right there on par with how it felt last year at Comic-Con San Diego with "Iron Man." It was exactly the idea for New York Comic-Con. The plan was always to unveil "Iron Man" in San Diego last year because we were finished filming. We wanted to bring Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, Louis, Gale in San Diego and introduce them to people, but we hadn't started filming yet, so we left that saying, "We're going to hit New York." It's about two months from release and the film's not finished yet, but it's close enough that we'd have the goods to show and I'm glad people responded to it.

CS/SHH!: You introduced the "Iron Man" and "Hulk" movies at Comic-Con a few years ago, but other than "Wolverine," we really haven't gotten any definite word about any upcoming Marvel comic book movies. Are you going to wait until the end of summer to see how these perform before figuring out what to do next?

Feige: No, no, we have any number of things in development right now. It's a contest between a few of them to see which one will go first, but I do think that sometime between "Iron Man" and "Hulk," we'll be making announcements for the next one. We won't make you wait too long.

CS/SHH!: Do you think there's a chance of doing more "Iron Man" and "Hulk" movies as well or is it more important to try to introduce some of the other characters to build to a possible "Avengers" movie? I assume you have some sort of game plan.

Feige: We do, we do have a game plan, but the game plan is based on box office of course, so we'll see how it is. We're encouraged about the hype for "Iron Man," encouraged about the buzz for "Hulk" so if the summer goes as planned, you'll probably see the next two probably at the end of '09 or definitely 2010.

CS/SHH!: One issue that arose when the first "X-Men" movie came out was that the comic books rarely reflect the characters as portrayed in the movies. Do you think that matters at this point?

Feige: I think they clearly inhabit their own world, but the truth is that Marvel now, we are working hand-in-hand with Joe Quesada and Dan Buckley and people within the publishing community in New York, and they're all part of our discussions. We do want to keep a sense of at least a spirit of continuity between them. The comics will always be pioneering in terms of the stories. I'm not sure you're going to see Secret Invasion or Skrulls popping up in our next film, but definitely you will see stories about Iron Man about Hulk about Cap. They definitely know what our upcoming slate is and we'll adjust accordingly, just to give whatever characters are coming up more page time, if you will.

CS/SHH!: How has it been working with the different studios? Marvel Studios is obviously producing its own films but you are working with different studios like Paramount and Universal to get them out there.

Feige: It's been great. With Universal and Paramount, they're distributing films for us. We're producing them wholly ourselves. With Fox, they produce the "X-Men" series, with Sony, they produce the "Spider-Man" series in partnership with us, but it's been great relationships. We've been very lucky to work with the best studios around.

CS/SHH!: There couldn't possibly be an issue with "The Avengers" because the characters are at different studios, could there?

Feige: The characters that we control ourselves now--Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Ant-Man--could one day assemble.

Producer Gale Anne Hurd probably needs little introduction to Superhero Hype! readers, having been heavily involved in the early career of James Cameron having produced The Terminator and Aliens, as well as spearheading the first "Hulk" and "Punisher" movies, both which will be getting relaunched this year.

CS/SHH!: You're the one person who has remained consistent from the last movie to this one, and you brought on a whole new team for this. Still, one might think there is the most pressure on you to deliver a second "Hulk" movie that appeases those unhappy with the first one.

Gale Anne Hurd: I don't even consider it pressure, because it's a wonderful opportunity. How many people get the opportunity to start a franchise again and get to do a new take on it? I think it's wonderful that the last time it happened was with "Aliens." Going back, there was the first "Alien" and then James Cameron and I were able to do "Aliens" where there was a new slant on it as an action film as opposed to a horror film. I consider this to be in the tradition of that.

CS/SHH!: You now have Marvel Studios involved, so have you been the main tie between them and Universal?

Hurd: No, everyone works very collaboratively on this, so there's not one thing that a particularly person handles. Obviously, Louis is the director and he's the person whose vision it is that's brought to the screen, but in everything else, it's very much a collaboration.

CS/SHH!: Having produced so many big movies over the years, were you very influential in getting Edward Norton involved as Bruce Banner or Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky?

Hurd: We were all part of the meetings, but it was great actually to sit there and go, "Okay, Bruce Banner…" When you think of Bruce Banner from the TV series and the comic book, who would be perfect? Who would be great? And you look at Edward Norton, a guy who defines duality from "Primal Fear" to "Fight Club," and he's so smart. It was great being able to go after him and have him say, "Yes" and then Tim Roth in terms of villains, he's Oscar-nominated for the villain he played in "Rob Roy," and going back to "Reservoir Dogs." This is a guy who is interesting regardless of the role that he plays, and to be able to use the MOVA performance capture so that he can inform the Abomination, how great is that? And same with Edward Norton for the Hulk.

CS/SHH!: Having worked on the first movie and now this one, what would you like to fans to get out of this one or to convince them to go see this one if they're hesitant after seeing the first movie?

Hurd: Well, this time, it's "incredible"! The film is a very character-driven film so the people who are concerned that this time somehow we've left the character out, I think they will have their fears allayed, and then there are people who felt there wasn't enough "Hulk Smash!", I think from the footage you saw today--and we didn't even show two action sequences either in the trailer or in the footage you saw today--there's a lot more "Hulk Smash!" And I do read the Superhero Hype! boards and there's always the concern of "They've shown everything in the trailer." You know what? I'm one of those people, too, when I look at a trailer and I think, "Oh my God, they've put everything in it!" Well, people do not have to worry. There's a lot more. Even this new trailer. There's a lot more on screen, far more than we can put in a two and a half minute trailer.

CS/SHH!: Where do you go from here? Do you have plans for more superhero movies in your future?

Hurd: Are you kidding? It's like a kid with access to the greatest toy box in the world. As you can see (showing me the button), I'm doing the new "Punisher" film, it's going really, really well and Ray Stevenson, he looks like he stepped out of a Tim Bradstreet cover. We'll have a panel for that at Comic-Con in San Diego.
