"High School Musical 3" In MAJOR Trouble

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - With the overwhelming success of Disney Channel's "High School Musical 2" on the small screen, it's no secret Disney is itching to ride the wave of success with a big screen sequel.

Gossip reports surfaced today that the planned third movie, is in trouble. Several reports claim that stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens are holding out on the big screen version for more money.

When Access Hollywood spoke to Zac last week at the "HSM 2" premiere, he assured us it was something he wanted to do, "A third movie would be a dream come true. Finishing "High School Musical" with a third movie, that would be in theaters, is just sort of a tribute to everything we kind of did here."

At the same premiere, Vanessa told Access Hollywood she had not seen a script yet, but "If it's good of course we are all going to join back in We all have so much fun together. So, why wouldn't we do another one?"

Access Hollywood has confirmed today with their reps that both Zac and Vanessa are still in talks to do the third movie.

Walt Disney Studios today released the following statement; "There is no contractual obligation for any of the cast members to return. That said, we are in active negotiations with all of the principle cast members and are feeling optimistic."

Back in February, Disney announced plans for a 2008 feature film sequel with a Halloween themed dubbed "Haunted High School Musical." Today Disney says they have scrapped plans for the Halloween theme and instead will focus on the senior year of key characters at East High. The original writer from the first two films, Peter Barsocchini, is writing the script. The original producers and director are also on board.

Director Kenny Ortega confirmed to Access Hollywood last week that he is definitely on board too.

I agree. I liked the first one enough but now it is everywhere and it just turned me off to it. I don't like the two leads anymore either.

Vanessa Hudgens apologized Friday for the photos, which show her smiling as she posed naked and in underwear in a bedroom with a red curtain behind her.

"Vanessa has apologized for what was obviously a lapse in judgment," said Disney Channel spokeswoman Patti McTeague. "We hope she's learned a valuable lesson."

She said negotiations were ongoing to land all the actors for a "High School Musical 3" feature film — including Hudgens.

Hudgens, who played the brainy Gabriella in the first two made-for-cable TV movies, told her fans she was sorry.

"I am embarrassed over this situation and regret having ever taken these photos," she said. "I am thankful for the support of my family and friends."

Hudgens' publicist, Jill Fritzo, wouldn't say anything about who took the pictures and how they slipped out onto the Internet.

The bookworm Gabriella was the love interest of Troy, the basketball star played by pinup king Zac Efron. The sequel's premiere on Disney Channel last month attracted more than 17 million viewers, making it the summer's most-watched TV program.

If Disney executives had cut ties to Hudgens, not wanting the company's name associated with anything not G-rated, they would have run the risk of upsetting a formula that has made the company millions upon millions of dollars.

How would parents explain to the show's young fans that the old Gabriella was being replaced by another actress?

"That's her private life, not her public life. That picture got leaked by somebody who broke a trust with her," said Michele Smith of Westborough, Mass., whose 8-year-old daughter Kathryn is a devoted "High School Musical" fan.

Dropping her from future movies or other "High School Musical" projects would not only be unfair to Hudgens but to fans such as Kathryn, Smith said.

"If Vanessa is not in the movie, my daughter would not be so excited to see it," she said.

Smith said she hopes that Kathryn doesn't hear about the photo but, if she does, she's prepared to talk about it. She'll say that it's something private for Vanessa that shouldn't have been shared.

The best thing for Disney was to do nothing, said Michael Levine, a Hollywood image consultant and author of 18 books.

"What they shouldn't do is make a bigger deal out of it than is necessary," he said. "The picture is not salacious."

Michael Sands, a publicist whose clients have included the divorce attorney for Britney Spears' ex-husband Kevin Federline, said Hudgens should be commended for coming forward quickly and saying it was her pictures.

"She's very talented and this is a big cash cow for Disney," he said.

She’s been America’s Sweetheart since the first High School Musical movie hit the Disney Channel. But in light of her recent nude photo scandal, there are unconfirmed reports that Vanessa Hudgens may not be coming back for round three.

According to some industry insiders, Hudgens has too much “baggage” to be considered for a reprise of her starring roles in High School Musicals 1 and 2. And as long as Zac Efron is on board, Disney is confident they’ll be fine.

A source told press, “Disney finally decided that they don’t want her back. They feel that as long as Zac Efron is in the movie, all will be fine. He’s the real star – the household name – and, most importantly, he comes without baggage.”

As for her replacement, speculation is rampant that Cheetah Girl Adrienne Baillon could be the girl. Also being considered is Sabrina Bryan from “Dancing with the Stars.” A source told press, “The producers think that after Dancing With the Stars, Sabrina will be more famous than Vanessa.”

And Adrienne Baillon isn’t doing much to quell the rumors. She told press, “I’m trying to convince Disney to let the whole Disney circle of stars in. I’m just trying to convince Disney to let your Zac and Codys and your Brenda Strongs join High School Musical. We all come in and invade their high school; that would be pretty hot. Put us all together in a feature film!”
