It's sort of emblematic of many of the films being made on the "indie" circuit dealing with the dynamics of dysfuncional familes. Alan Arkman is the man. There are the more esoteric bits like Carell's character being the "most highly regarded Proust scholar" and the son's obsession with Nietzsche. But really the story in itself is funny, the acting is awesome, and the movie is really well-shot. And DeVotchKa all over the score/soundtrack helps too.
