New Details on "X-Men" Spinoffs

USA Today has published an update on the various "X-Men" spinoffs in the works, including Wolverine, Magneto, one on the kids and another on Emma Frost. The newspaper's scoop:

The first spinoff will be Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. His character has an as-yet-unrevealed back story in which researchers replaced his original bones with a metal skeleton. Jackman has signed on to star and co-produce, and X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner says it will likely head into production next year.

"We've also talked about doing something on the kids in (Professor X's) school, focusing on their lives, and less of a global adventure for the team," says Hutch Parker, production president of 20th Century Fox.

The studio is also exploring a movie with Three Kings director David O. Russell based on the character of Emma Frost, a sexy mutant telepath who can transform her skin into diamonds. She is an X-Men comics regular but was not featured in the movies.

Another likely solo project: Magneto, also in the script phase. The film will focus on his youthful pre-villain days, Shuler Donner says.

Though it would require a younger actor for those sequences, she says the film would need Ian McKellen to anchor the flashbacks. "What's a Magneto movie without Ian?" she asks.

^Thanks for the news! So if they do one of the kids at the school, would that more than likely include Bobby/Iceaman (hoping that it is Shawn Ashmore)?

Maybe, since Iceman was one of the Original X-Men in the very first Comic \/

Sounds great. Really they can just keep making these movies and I would never get tired of them.

This new x-men movie made so much money. Blew away the Da Vinci Code which was the highest of the year.

Aughhhh.... Emma as headmaster of Xavier's --no! no! no! I'm firmly in the Emma is evil camp.

The concept of an Emma Frost running Xavier's school is also the same plotline as the Generation X tv movie/pilot that came out several years ago and was unwatchable. It's just not that strong of a concept. Emma's character is just too unlikeable.

What would be way better would be a film based on when Magneto was head of the school (in the classic New Mutants). That was some of the most brillant comics written.

I highly doubt the students would include Iceman. They've got to have graduated that class finally. They're probably going to use some of the New Mutant/X-Force type characters, maybe Illyania Rasputin, Dani Moonstrong, Doug Ramsey, Sam & Paige Guthrie, Rahne Sinclair, and maybe some of the Generation X characters, maybe Jubilee. If they include Kitty Pryde, I'll be pissed since she's always protested being lumped into the New Mutants.

I still don't think that the concepts of an Emma Frost/New Mutants type movie or a Magneto movie would really work. Not that many people are interested, and those that are X-Fans will be seriously pissed off because they've changed everything. Look at Elektra. That tanked at the box office since comic fans hated it and the general public thought it was terrible.

It would be far better to combine the two concepts. Put Magneto incharge of the New Mutants, and have Emma Frost in charge of the rival school (the Hellions). And include some flashbacks of young Magneto. Then they've got a movie the X-fans would enjoy.

I found Magnus to be a much more interesting character when he was struggling with trying to be a good guy, and it's also really, really funny when he's dealing with teenagers.

have you read any of the xmen comics? mainly the generation x title and some current ones of xmen. she's been the headmistress in the generation x title where xavier had created a new school. banshee was headmaster of the school. together they trained a fresh new batch of mutants along with jubilee. although emma still had her dark side which made her character fun.

i stopped reading the comics but by what i've read on several x men websites it seems emma along with scott (cyclops summers) are running the school now since xavier isn't. and seems that once again that jean (phoenix) grey is dead again and scott and emma are an item. at least that 's what i read.

i will say that the generation x movie that came out a long time ago sucked and i hated it. they got the characters wrong and the wrong actors for the parts. although i say they should have shadowcat back as a student as well as colossus. their characters still need to be fleshed out and as well as jubilee.

There are so many characters and so many ways that they could go. There are dozens of characters that remain untouched, and some that really haven't been explored at all, like angel.

Now, I don't think Iceman has been apart of the school for very long. Didn't he say in the second one that he has only been at the school for a couple of years? I just hope they make a fourth one because then he'll probably be in it.

He's been there since the very beginning; he's one of the Original X-Men. You can't just go by the Movies alone.

In the movies you can. In the movie he wasn't there since the very beginning and he wasn't one of the original X-Men, which is why he's still a student.

You can't really match continuity of the movies to continuity of the comics. They take some basic stuff about these characters, but play around with them. Some stuff still could happen, but they happen in diferent parts of their lives in the movie incarnation.

Agreed. Such as Scott/Jean's kid in the comics even though they both appear to be dead at this point in the saga.

They do have adults in the school. So he may just become a teacher or something when he graduates. But since you said that the movies are making him out to be there for only a few years, then he probably will be in the one they do of just the kids at school. That is, if they do a movie like that.

I think the only spinoff that has a chance at being good/successful is the Wolverine one.
