I was so psyched to see Johnny nominated. I didn't think it was going to happen. I don't think he's going to win but it's cool that he was finally nominated. The nomination proves once again how brilliant a performer Johnny Depp is to get an Academy Award nomination for a summer popcorn movie based on a ride in Disneyland. If any other actor would have gotten that role there's no way in hell they would have been nominated for an oscar for it. It was cool to see the little girl from Whale Rider nominated as well. She was amazing. [ January 28, 2004, 02:29 PM: Message edited by: BoredJen ]

I think it's great that Johnny is finally getting recognized. He was brilliant in POTC, and the fact that all anyone could talk about was his performance (not the special effects, the story, etc) really says a lot. It's also great to see the Academy really looking at the peformance, and not just the rest of the movie to give it "credibility." They're finally wising up to the fact that a performance doesn't necessarily have to be playing a mentally ill/physically handicapped/really depressed kind of role to be great. My Predictions (who I think WILL win, not necessarily who should): Best Picture - Lord of the Rings: Return of the King Best Director - Peter Jackson, LOTR: ROTK Best Actor - Sean Penn, Mystic River Best Actress - Charlize Theron, Monster Best Supporting Actor - Alec Baldwin, The Cooler Best Supporting Actress - Renee Zellwegger, Cold Mountain Best Original Screenplay - Sofia Coppola, Lost In Translation [ January 29, 2004, 01:28 AM: Message edited by: Lemmiwinks ]

This is true. I have a feeling if they had gotten a not-so-pretty actress to play any of those parts, they wouldn't have gotten half the attention that Charlize, Halle, and Nicole have gotten. I personally didn't feel Halle was all that great in Monster's Ball. I shouldn't comment on Nicole and Charlize, since I haven't seen Monster or The Hours.

I'm actually glad that Tom Cruise didn't get a nomination. Although he was good, I don't think he deserved an OSCAR nomination. Maybe a Golden Globe...? I'm actually really happy with the nominees this year. Especially the best actress category. Scarlett should have had a nomination though. [ January 31, 2004, 12:18 AM: Message edited by: Andrew ]

I'm not happy because all the LOTR nominations make this look more like the razzies than the oscars. Oh well.. On the other hand I was SOOOOO suprised and happy to see Samantha Morton get nominated! It's too bad she had to get nominated the exact same year that Naomi Watts did. Hmm I really can't decide who i'd like to see win. They'll both probably lose to Charlize though. Best Film 1. Lost in Translation 2. Mystic River 3. Seabiscuit 4. Master and Commander 5. LotR: RotK Only two movies that I want to see win. Last year they had four. Best Actor 1. Bill Murray - Lost in Translation 2. Sean Penn - Mystic River 3. Jude Law - Cold Mountain 4. Johnny Depp - PotC: COTBP 5. Ben Kingsley - House of Sand and Fog ? I want to see Sean Penn or Bill Murray win. No one else. Not even Jude or Johnny (even though I love them both) Best Actress 1. Samantha Morton - In America/Naomi Watts - 21 Grams 2. Charlize Theron - Monster 3. Keisha Castle-Hughes - Whale Rider 4. Diane Keaton - Something's Gotta Give Best Supporting Actor 1. Benicio Del Toro - 21 Grams 2. Ken Watanabe - The Last Samurai 3. Tim Robbins - Mystic River Best Supporting Actress 1. Renee Zellweger - Cold Mountain 2. Holly Hunter - Thirteen 3. Patricia Clarkson - Pieces of April I'd love to see any of these three win Best Director 1. Fernando Meirelles - City of God 2. Clint Eastwood - Mystic River 3. Sofia Coppola - Lost in Translation 4. Peter Weir - Master and Commander 5. Peter Jackson - LotR: RotK I love Weir but MAC looked really crappy.
