Ringu is genius. But for a frame-by-frame class on how to make a horror movie, you need John Carpenter's "Halloween". Frame by frame.
John Carpenter's "The Thing" is good too. Intense, paranoid... the best horror movies save their most scary scenes for when the monster is not on screen, like
"The Thing": We'll just sit here until we know what's what and who's who...
"Jaws": We're going to need a bigger boat.
"Alien": You have no weapons ... at all?
"Aliens": I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit.
This is the genius of Ringu: more or less the entire movie is composed of these monster-free moments. |
