Man from ‘Mars’ bites back
As it often happens in Hollywood, one man’s loss is another man’s gain. That’s the situation Jason Dohring found himself in last summer when he was cast as 400-year-old vampire Josef in the CBS drama “Moonlight” (tonight at 9 on WBZ, Ch. 4). Dohring replaced 61-year-old Rade Serbedzija, who played Josef in the pilot. Producers decided they wanted to take the character in another direction. “It kind of sucks because it was another guy’s job,” Dohring said. “But it’s obviously great to be (on the show). This cast is pretty unbelievable.” Just a few months after “Veronica Mars” was canceled, ending the 25-year-old’s run as bad-boy Logan Echolls, Dohring received a call from “Moonlight” executive producer Joel Silver. Silver also served as executive producer of “Veronica Mars.” The part of Josef was being rewritten and Dohring auditioned after seeing only two script pages. “I was so nervous to do this role,” he said. “I’m just working on it and working on it. I’m the youngster and I have to play obviously a 400-year-old, so I have to have seniority over all these people that I really respect. And so that’s going to be my trick to be able to play that.” Unlike Logan, Dohring said that Josef, who serves as a mentor for vampire Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin), has no soft spot. “He’s Logan on steroids,” he said. “He’s bad and not as redeemable as Logan. This guy has a lot of fun.” Viewers who are accustomed to seeing him as a teen heartthrob will get used to his new role and find themselves rooting for Josef, Dohring said. “I have fun playing bad guys. And as long as you’re having fun, it’s this phenomenon . . . viewers root for the villain.” The Ohio native has been acting since he was 12 and appeared on such shows as “Judging Amy,” “Boston Public” and “Cold Case.” “Veronica Mars” gave him his breakout role. He still misses the show. “I wish we could have found an audience, more because it was obviously such a good group of people. We were just like a family,” he said. “We were living there for three years. We all kind of grew up together on that show. We were all not famous or anything like that. It’s so sad, but everybody was so good on that show that I’m sure everybody has a future.” Fang-Tastic: Jason Dohring in ‘Moonlight.’ Original post: Jason Dohring |
