LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Pop icon Michael Jackson died Thursday after suffering a cardiac arrest, the entertainment website TMZ.com reported.

The website reported that Jackson, 50, suffered a heart attack just after 12:00 pm (1900 GMT) local time and paramedics were unable to revive him.

Jackson's manager Tohme E. Tohme was not immediately available for comment when contacted by AFP. Officials at UCLA Medical Center where Jackson was treated also could not be reached for comment.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Devin Gales would not confirm Jackson's identity but said paramedics went to an address corresponding to the star's home at 12:21 pm (1921 GMT) and the person was taken to UCLA Medical Center.

It is sad,
this was definitely the most talented person in rock/pop music and dancing for thirty years,
even though the songs lacked taste,
and contained many many fascist messages,

I think he's the embodiment of american ideology.
I remember the day my brother got the MJ history double-cd 14 years ago. We always had the second disc playing in the car

I cant believe Michael Jackson has died! Its so sad and I cant believe how horrible some people are being out there on the net. He was a musical genius irrespective of his personal life. Good to see the stars are coming out to pay tribute to him tho http://showbiz.sky.com/stars-remember-michael

Hello. What can I say?! It seems God asked for a private concert and he asked for the best performer: Michael Jackson. Right now Michael is performing his best concert ever and his longest one! May it be peaceful and full of success!

I got a text message from a friend of mine who is a journalist when he was taken from his house already dead! Hey, guys here in USA Michael Jackson for real came to my city where I live after a massive school shooting back in 1989! I will never forget that moment!

Television networks planning Jackson coverage

NBC executives changed their minds Sunday and decided to join other networks that will televise Michael Jackson's memorial service live this week.

NBC joins ABC, CNN, MSNBC and E! Entertainment in offering the ceremony live. It's set for 10 a.m. PDT (1700 GMT) Tuesday at Los Angeles' Staples Center.

NBC had initially planned only a one-hour prime-time special on Tuesday night, but said Sunday it would also cover the event live. It was not immediately clear who would anchor.

Charles Gibson will anchor coverage for ABC, which is setting aside its typical daytime programming.

CBS anchor Katie Couric will be at the Staples Center, although the network had not yet said whether it was offering live coverage of the memorial.

CNN has seen its ratings soar with the Jackson story, and it will show the memorial on the main network and HLN (formerly Headline News). CNN International will air the ceremony to the rest of the world. Anderson Cooper, Larry King and Don Lemon are the anchors for CNN coverage. Robin Meade, A.J. Hammer and Jane Velez-Mitchell will anchor at HLN. CNN en Espanol also will cover it.

Chris Jansing will anchor live coverage of the memorial on MSNBC. Fox News Channel hadn't announced its plans.

E! Entertainment will cover the ceremony on its television network and its Web site.
