As Graham Parker said, "I've seen the future of rock...and it sucks." Corporate bigwigs, plastic American Idol rejects, classless rap, annoyingly dissonant rock...standards have hit the toilet. Most of the great artists are still making strong music-the Stones, Springsteen, Dylan are three obvious examples. MP3 players have destroyed the art of the album as song cycle. Music is now packaged like cereal. Even the music video is dead. Ten years from now, the artists that filled our dreams like The Who, Yes, AC/DC, etc. will be either dead or dying. I'm a product of the seventies, when music really meant something and informed our lives more than any newspaper. Now, everything is blogs and twitter. All of the great Independent record stores have either closed or are closing. I have to use Amazon now to order my music because I REFUSE to walk in the s@#thole known as Walley World. Thankfully, there are still a few bands keeping the spirit of real rock and roll alive, like my friend Frank's band Freudian Slip and the Black Crowes, but they are the exception. Call me a crabby old man if you like, but the glory days are long behind us. And we won't get fooled again. Last edited by Timothywalker; 04-30-2009 at 10:37 AM.. |

Secondly, I agree with you as well Tim 100 percent on what you have written. Very sad state. I do watch "American Idol", however it saddens me to see these kids get somewhere from out of nowhere (most of them not even been on stage before), as the REAL musicians are busting their asses off every night performing in clubs (as well as playing instruments and writing songs). The "working class musician" as we know it is dead and gone sadly. This is why I have found (via Myspace for example) a lot of kids listening and loving the Beatle and Who. I have spoken to some of them and they don't like the so called "music" of today. In regards to rap, it shouldn't be called rap music, as music must have melody and that genre certanily doesn't! It's saddens me as well as it seems the record companies are full of suits who don't know jack crap about music, but just want the money (particularly since the companies now have stocks-hence the "Corporate music" title which started in the 1980s). Basically what I am saying is: It's now all quanity, not quality. Case in point: if any one listens to the music of today (I do, as I have to keep abreast on what's being playing), a lot of these "singers" are using autotuning for their vocals. Basically, auto tuning is to be used to correct a pitch for singing, but alas, they are using it thought out the whole song! Which in turn is cheating! No real vocals used (and don't get me started on Britney Spears, whom I hear just lip syncs at her concert-who the hell wants to pay $50 or so to see someone just lip sync! Give me a break). Who knows how the music biz will be like 10 years from now. I am scared to think. I will stop now before I keep ranting on. I do hope however that the music biz will change for the better. You are in the thick of the music biz so you know exactly what is happening. I don't have a problem with American Idol as an entertainment concept because it is a lot of fun to watch, but it really bothers me that these kids are becoming instant stars without ever paying the dues that real artists pay. I prefer musicians that write their own songs and most of these kids will probably never get the chance to do that. That is why I don't listen to hardly any country music. They are all pre-fabricated so they will look good in the music videos. Artists like Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney can barely sing and yet they are considered superstars. It just makes me sick to my stomach. I guess I'll stop belly aching now because I'm starting to sound like my father! LOL! |
