| Newbie | I've thought of a couple more. One of them is Kanye West. Wow. Did this guy really rhyme "arm" with "arm"? His beats are fun and catchy I guess, but his lyrics certainly leave something to be desired. And I used to think his ego was an act, which I thought was kind of fun and a clever way to lampoon mainstream rappers. But I'm thinking more and more that it's not an act and now it's just scary. The second one is At the Drive-In/The Mars Volta. Now, I understand the title of this thread is music artists you are not impressed with and I am impressed by them as musicians. But listening to their music is just torture to me. They are guilty of the same thing most bands of their kind are guilty of; they try way too hard. And in the midst of trying too hard they completely lose any kind of heart or soul, which as musicians they clearly have or they wouldn't try so hard. And not only that, but they try so hard and take themselves so seriously that their music kind of becomes laughable. |

Not to say they're Enos or Fripps, but they ride the line between careful composition and the attempt at short-circuiting the physical form, the brain and the heart to all work at the same time. For my money Deloused is probably one of the best albums in the last 10 years, I know phrases like that get thrown out in vain, but it's true. |

Which is funny because before the last album, she tried to shy away from what was expected of her, collaborating with people like Bela Fleck, Caetano Veloso and the Kronos Quarter, record flunked so her label probably went for the predictable route, hired Timbaland. Sucess. |

You know the one who actually finances her project, so she can stay in fancy hotels, live the good life. She wasn't a house hold name or established enuff to actually release another record like "Folklore", and being faced with the looming pressure of being sacked if it didn't sell. ![]() You pretty much gotta sell your soul to SPECTRE to get that kind of artistic "freedom". ![]() |
