Disappointing follow up albums

So i bought Taking Back Sunday's 3rd album last week, have to say i'm pretty disappointed. On their 1st two there were at least 3 songs on each that when i heard them the 1st time i got shivers and i still think they're great, but this one is very unfulfilling and blah. Maybe it's because i've been listening to more 'hardcore' albums the past 7 months, but i'm still pretty gutted.

I'm seeing them for the *counts* 4th time in May, and i just hope they play all the older stuff because the new stuff is trash.

Anyone else have this problem with any other bands?

Yeah of course, but it's usually the second album that blows, or at least isn't as good. There is a great quote that really explains it for me, but I can't remember for the life of me exactly what it says or who said it. But he(she?) pretty much said: you have your whole life to write and prepare for that first album, and than you get two or three years to work on your follow up, and that is why it's hard to match your first album.

But for me it's also because I love that raw, unpolished, sound that is often found on debut albums.

Most of the bands I listen to seemed to have better second albums, or at most not disappointing second albums.
