The line "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers" from the 1992 song "One" topped a poll conducted by music channel VH1. Runner-up was the downbeat "So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die" from The Smiths' "How Soon is Now." A line from Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" — "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us" — came third. Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Coldplay's "Yellow" took fourth and fifth places. The top 10 was a mix of the affirmative and the acerbic, ranging from Robbie Williams' uplifting "Angels" — "And through it all she offers me protection, a lot of love and affection, whether I'm right or wrong" — to Radiohead's sour "Creep." More than 13,000 people participated in the poll on the station's Web site, choosing from a list of 100 lyrics selected by music industry figures. |

Love and respect for both or Beefheart will destroy you. Both are two of the best lyricists in contemporary rock or whatever. And that's not fan boy, I know many people who agree. Although, different tastes for every person Beefheart guesses. Coldplay? Robbie Williams? Creep? Just say no. There's a line from U2 on "Where the Streets have No Name", the intro when the drummers starts the beat and Bono goes "ummm, yeah.. I can't believe the news today". Gives me chills everytime I hear it, especially the live version. There's a texture to his voice that isn't on the studio versions that gives the lyrics added dimensions, that make that moment perfect. It's like an uplifting sorrow, that's both triumphant and alive, but also alone in all of the noise. Amazing moment. |

All of the self deprecation and feelings of not being worthy are something to which most of us can relate I guess. RUUUN, RUUUN, RUUUUUUUUUUN!!!!!!!!!!! Coldplay lyrics serve as a fine example of everything that's wrong with rock music today. Not a million one liners could make bright the impenetrable bubblicious innard of their stupidity. They're "beyond the noble salvage", as some would say. "Not worth the candle." |
