Bass players don't seem to get as much recognition as guitarists and vocalists, and legend has it they don't get as many chicks as the drummers. So let's all use this thread to appreciate the bass players! Uh...I guess we can talk about our favourites. One of mine is Geddy Lee from Rush. He has a terrible voice, but if you've ever watched him play you'd know how amazing he is. Another amazing bass player in John Entwistle from The Who. I never really listened to The Who (still don't), but I saw this program on TV about guitarists and bass players, and he was on there ripping away on the four string. And finally, the greatest bass player I have ever heard: John Myung of Dream Theater. That man's hands are like many spiders dancing on the fretboard. It's mind blowing.

Never heard of them! Well, in a lot of music the b*** just isn't a very prominant instrument. But even so, a b*** player must be able to hold down the rhythm. If you take the b*** out of songs, it could sound empty. B*** is underrated. One other I forgot to mention was the jazz b***ist Jaco Pastorius. I mean...wow. WOW!

Oh yeah, Steve Harris is great. He's not a technical bass player or anything, but he writes some good stuff. I like his playing the most in 2 Minutes to Midnight, and the galloping stuff is great.

yes ,i agree, geddy lee is amazing, have seen him live a couple of times.at one point he was singing, playing bass, keyboard synth, and foot pedal synth, all at the same time.amazing!let`s see these lip sync wonders of todays so called music do that, hell, they can barely keep there lips in sync with the "music"and i use that term loosly here. also, one of my favorite bass players of all time is tom fowler, who played on several frank zappa albums and tours.if your interested, listen to "one size fits all" album by zappa.

Yeah, Geddy's a pretty multifaceted guy on stage. It's great seeing him do all those things. You'd think Rush would benefit from a fourth member, but Geddy just takes over every other job that's not drums or guitar. Two other awesome bass players are Stuart Hamm and Billy Sheehan. What's even more awesome is that these guys played with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, respectively. Oh, and check this out: http://www.bx3tour.com/main.html

| Mu nótahu ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Bass players just need to understand their roles, stay out of the way of the guitarist and you'll be appreciated. Now seriously all I you can ask from them is to stay on the pocket. Pocket is a sensation of feeling the music, while playing your part. It's not playing with groove (which is not timed like a metronome, but timed from within yourself, as you feel the music instead of thinking about it), but it's the magic that happens when the rhytm section specifically, or a group of instruments in general, are playing the same groove. It's possible when different players feel the music in the same way and all let the music come from within. I guess it's the musical equivalent of being able to look at somebody for a split second and knowing EXACTLY how the feel and what they are going to say. Geedy Lee is a great frontman(vocalist). |
