Concept aside the song is pretty good, nice use of texture/effects, subtle shifts and modulations that bring out the beauty and tensions in what is essentially a pretty simple tune which sounds like GY!BE especially in the intro, cool bongo overdubs towards the outro, and if there were any doubts that Cedric doesn't sound like Geddy Lee from Rush they're erased in the intro to the song itself, and the falsetto he pulls towards the middle. The video itself is kinda "weird", maybe they're watching to much Donnie Darko or something, or maybe they just wanna give Radiohead a run for their money on best videos and overall pretentiousness. ;) [ February 10, 2004, 02:16 PM: Message edited by: Captain Beefheart ] |

It's good movie, but I think the people who talk about how utterly great it is are just pseudo-intellectuals who want to be able to talk about an avant-garde-ish/strange film besides "The Matrix". Then again the success or failure of a work of art depends on who decides what qualifies as "success." If inspiring as many people as possible is desired, then an accurate understanding of the artist's intent is not important. Films that could accidentally rip "Donnie Darko" a new *******: The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover Jacob's Ladder Tetsuo: The Iron Man My Dinner with Andre The Reflecting Skin Holy Mountain Army of Darkness MicroCosmos Koyaanisqatsi Pi A Clockwork Orange Memento The Wall Darker, more cynical, more insightful, more thought-provoking, and more atmospheric than "Donnie Emo" could ever be, sans run-of-the-mill, rapid-fire, cheesey-as-**** metaphors. Then again you could use the same arguments against Mars Volta like Pitchfork did and while I'm not making any claims that they're "revolutionary" and "original", they're the best band to hit mainstream since mmmmmmm *ponders*, Tool. Notice they actually have more in common than just *killer drummers* and not self-promoting themselves on their videos. Anything that causes wonder, awe, or curiosity in it's audience is good enuff for me. Just my $.02 worth. [ February 12, 2004, 09:01 AM: Message edited by: Captain Beefheart ] |

| no one thinks donnie darko is a groundbreaking amazing film. it's weird and cool and a cult favorite. nothing more. in fact everyone who reviews it points out everything that is wrong with it. |

If you're not even remotely interested in the the band perse and the concept-subject of the "album", take a risk and just watch the video, there's nothing to loose. ;) @Foo-Emule is like women, once you figure them out, you can take advantage of them. First if you haven't read the forums, I would advice so, since most of the usual questions are asked there, then I would "set" the prog. itself so it can run to it's "maximum potential".[Preference>Connection>Etc]. Keeping in mind that the more you upload, the more you'll download and the higher priority you'll get on the "Quee" List. DC isn't news to me, Coypu(Johann) was pimping the hell out it like a year ago. I don't really like it. And the rest of the movies you mentioned are "mainstream", Tom Cruise, Julian Moore, Philip Seymour Huffman, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton Jr, Jared Leto, Jennifer Conelly mmmmmmmm? They are good movies don't get me wrong. @darko-Maybe i'm out of touch with reality, or maybe it's just a coincidence that every silly internet forum talks about Donnie Darko and shares a strange fascination with "asian" women and the use of silly 12 yr old internet language. @Jocasta-Yeah I have that one on VHS, when I saw for the first time in my teens, I couldn't really understand the concept itself, just the music perse. But now it all makes sense somehow. I'm deeply fascinated by the concept of "schizophrenia" and parenting and it's effects on children when they grow. Teachers themselves want convenience and conformity, not necessarily in that order. So they have an interest in medicating the "challenging" children creating upnatural reactions to the rapid growth of what you could term an "institutional society," and that this society has created so much discontent and disconnection that many of us are actually breaking down because of it.. I will lay myself on a bunker underground. Sum Radiohead reference there ehh? The third cut on "Hail to the Thief" sounds like a Pink Floyd tune. It's not a coincidence brits are also fascinated by that behavior and always seem to question the "status quo". Someone is always saying the world is going to hell in a handbasket. But the criticism of our social climate needs to be taken seriously. We all have to deal with the system; just don't take it too seriously unless incarceration is involved! ;) [ February 12, 2004, 11:22 AM: Message edited by: Captain Beefheart ] |

| hah. i dont go to those obsessed forums...kreuk forum was obsessed enough for my tastes thank you. and i managed to get out of there. don't we all have a thing for asian girls? OMGWTFBBQ LOL!!!11111 kekekekek akakakkakakakaka ^__^ anyway...the video was ok. i am aimmune to all things pretentious. i will admit that their album takes the phrase "self-indulgent" to new heights. but i still like them...i'm a TOOLophile at heart, my main man. i can see through the pretensciousness. it was good visually. not sure what they were trying to do with it. then again the album is supposedly about cedric's friend who died a while back. according to him it is anyway and no one can tell that just from listening to it so obviously he doesn't care if anyone gets it, which is good in a way, but after a while it will get old and you have to let the people in on the joke at some point. i dont want to hear crap about just making music for themselves. they play in front of people. that means he cares. The soundtrack basically follows the chornology of the film and includes "Head over Heals," Under The Milky Way" and both version of Mad World (the one in the film and the original Tears for Fears version). I just love listening to this since the use of music in the film was simply amazing and I love the score to :D Quote:

| the monkey in the video is a suicidal monkey who bashes his head against the cage until he dies. thats why its only in one zoo; in cleveland. probably why it kills itself in the video. damn that monkey is crazy. ![]() |
