Always remember everything you read from Rolling Stone is true, even if you fail to see the paradox of reading a Tom Waits review on a Christina Aguilera cover with a guitar I think mainstream music's been passe for a long time now, but it will always be around. We have arrived at a critical density in population in the US and the dance of individuality has succumbed to the formulae necessary to control and govern (or sell to) masses of asses. The 60s and 70s were truly an interesting time in terms of artistic output but the openness and readiness of the populace to embrace different things has been long gone. Sad isn't it? I would love to see an actual change, not just getting back to "the roots" which isn't The Pixies, Sonic Youth etc. I think this is just an attempt to catter the audience that just hates the current state of music. The radio has, over time, degrated itself from being a pioneer of new music, to a commercial success. The thing that bugs me the most is that when the radio stations FINALLY dig out the classics, they always play the same songs "Panama", "Back in Black", "Iron Man", "Stairway to Heaven", "Smoke on the Water". I mean, can't they play something different once in a while? Radiostations are too busy playing it safe, and not taking enough risks anymore, there's not a really big change at all, that will probably come in the next few years when "Satellite Radio" hits pretty big and displaces the radio itself as just another pretious commodity. I've actually gone so out of my skull to where I'm worried music is over. All we have left is nostalgia. The great bands are all old. The new ones are rehash, Strokes, Jet, Darkness, White Stripes, and all that plethora of crap. I built my life AROUND music, so I'm thinking that life is over. Maybe this is where I grow up. Nah, not quite there yet. There's still AVANT TRIP-HOP FUSIONED JAZZ to get into. Just another opinion. [ January 30, 2004, 11:31 PM: Message edited by: Captain Beefheart ] |
