| Well I have been reading much of what's said here and sad to see so much of it is negative. For those who don't know me I have worked in the music business as a bodyguard for roughly 14 years though for around 2 years I've been in semi retirement taking only short jobs. My entire time as a bodyguard has been spent in the music business. While I haven't worked for any big names I have met many of them at one time or another. My point with this is simple; I tend to talk from experience. I think much of the negativity that is directed at artists is sometimes misplaced. Yes; there are some acts out there that don't belong but they exist perhaps to make the real talent stand out. I don't blame the misguided acts out there; rather I would place blame on greedy record execs that sign anything they can get rather than true talent. They aim their greedy eyes at either a younger audience that really wouldn't know true talent or even worse aim at the angry and disaffected who will pick anything up that sounds aggressive. Sadly those who do understand the sacrifice that true musicians put into their music are left on the fringes waiting for something they can enjoy. Not all record labels are bad; the ones run by musicians tend to be more careful in their choices and go out of their way to see that true talent is rewarded. I've been through the recording of 4 CDs and to give you an idea one of them a 12 song album cost $30k to record then distribute. This was before pro-tools was perfected and one could record out of their garage. Think of that $30,000 out of pocket between 5 band members who in addition to music had to hold 9-5 day jobs and in two members cases raise families along with the money they bring in. A lable at the time would have been a godsend but they gutted it out and pulled it off. Myself I prefer musicians who write their own music namely rock acts. The occasional cover is cool but letting somebody else write all your material leads most often to disaster. While I have much to say I am exhausted and losing focus right now. In fact I'll likely come back to this tomorrow and cringe at what I've written. Either way I accept every hurled stone that awaits me. [ January 17, 2005, 01:52 AM: Message edited by: Winterwolf ] |

The best way to record a cd would be to get your own gear and record at home, thats what we have done and the cd sounds pretty damn good |

| Without fan support you do not get very far so it's a good idea to show your fans respect and listen to them to some extent. They are going to be the ones buying your or any other artists product. Sure changing ones sound or formula as you put it is a good idea. If you a 180 degree change in the way you do things you will lose some old fans even if they are replaced by newer ones. It's better to change things slowly. Disrespect for record companies is one thing; disrespect to fans is paramount to career suicide. |

| Junior Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Example: You have a band like Korn who will make the fans happy as well as there record companie and make some money while there at it. Then you have a band like The Berzerker who do care about the fans but do what ever they want. Underground bands seem to play alot more gig's and create better music than most mainstream bands and yet they get hardly any credit for it. You look at bands like Korn and Linkin Park and all the others and there not skilled and there still getting paid big money, then you have bands like Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel who have been around since the mid 80's and yet they look like they make hardly any money what so ever. And im ending this cause im going of topic and now im just bitching, hahaha |
