LOL! Bay darling, the black dog is Sidi, and yes he's had Sidi for a few years, but we're wondering where the other dog came from! But thanks for trying to help! I'm really curious because Sidi became so popular so fast and has a website and everything yet this pup has gone unnoticed... until now.

Congrats Miho on your new job. I think you did mention you were looking for a new one some weeks ago. We were talking about you seeing Pirates. Let's hope this one is much better for you.

Now back on topic... There's been a couple of Q & A's after performances of In Celebration (1 last week and 1 this week) and RosieB has been at it again. Here's her report from the 1st one...

Posted: Jul 27 2007, 08:27 AM

I am absolutely shattered after only 3 hours sleep but here is my report from last night's Q&A.

Firstly huge thanks to The Duke of York's Theatre, WhatsOnStage and all the cast for arranging and attending last night's event. I had an amazing time at the Q&A - the whole cast including Orlando attended plus the director Anna Mackmin and the assistant director Kate.

Most of the questions were asked by Terri from WhatsOnStage but the floor was opened to questions towards the end.

Everyone had chairs except Orlando who sat on the stage right in front of me! Orlando originally sat in one of the chairs, which was under a spotlight, but gave this up to Tim Healy, when they realised there were not enough chairs. He looked very tired and I think he was glad to sit on the floor where it was darker, as if he didn't want to be noticed (fat chance of that) and to make sure everyone else was in the limelight. How typical of him - he was very much emphasising that this is an ensemble piece and he is NOT the star of the show. He was given a large glass of what looked like lemonade and lime with ice and lemon, of course it may have been something stronger but I don't think so. He was wearing a white tee shirt under the light grey long sleeved tee shirt, and his dark grey hooded fleece, and his usual jeans.

There were a lot of questions and answers to the other members of the cast, but I have only slightly alluded to them and have tried to keep it to Orlando's part in the Q&A (so apologies to the others who were all very interesting in their answers!)

I made copious notes of Orlando's answers which follow here.

The entire cast and director were asked what had attracted them to the play -

Orlando - "I had been looking to do some theatre for a while, you know having worked in film, I have to admit I had never heard of David Storey but when I read the play I was blown away by it. I was attracted to Andy's part but...(lpoks at Paul Hilton and pats his knee) I am very fortunate to be working with these boys (points to Paul and Gareth Farr) and Anna (Mackmin, the director) and the whole cast for my first experience. When Anna asked me to read the play I realised that Steven was on an emotional journey..he is an emotional sponge, soaking up all that is happening"...(Laughs) "but I didn't realise how difficult it would be standing up here on the stage, especially on my own at the start. " (Smiles)

"Steven is a very silent part, so I have to be very focused and really concentrate...listen, you know, really listen for my cue...I'll be sitting there thinking 'oh, I think I have something to say in a minute'..you really have to concentrate"...(laughs)

"I think learning to listen, really listen and concentrating is one of the lessons I will take away from this experience." " It was quite scary at first, but I have been blessed, really blessed to feel so safe." "Everyone has had so much patience with me, you know, and it has been great to have so much rehearsal time...four weeks..you don't get that in films." "We were rehearsing from 9 to 6, or 9 to 10 whatever it was"...(here Anna chips in with "oh it was longer than that darling..we worked you really hard!") She then said that Orlando had been really diligent and hard working, and then the other members of the cast all agreed, Paul Hilton saying, "he is really great to work with, he'll be on the stage at 6pm walking through ..really preparing.." and then Lynda Baron said "he's just nice!".

There then followed questions about the play's author David Storey and a discussion about how autobiographical the play was. Orlando mentioned that Paul had started writing to David, asking him about himself, where he was when he wrote the play. He then talked about meeting David Storey.

"I asked him which of the three brothers he saw himself as, and he replied that he was a bit of all three, and that his brother, the fourth in his family, died aged seven too."

The three 'brothers' were asked if they had any brothers in real life. Paul and Orlando said no, but Gareth did. Orlando did say "..but I do have an older cousin" the cast all laughed so they had obviously met Sebastian when he came to the opening night!

Now comes the open forum.....

"Orlando, you have to portray very strong emotions each night in the play, do you find that difficult?"

Orlando nods, his head....then replies

"It is very daunting just standing up there on my own, especially for the first few performances." "I was very intimidated by Steven's breakdown, and it was great to have a womb-like rehearsal room to work through that." "It was very hard to get to that...Steven is an emotional sponge, you know...he is high status, very intelligent, he listens...he really listens to what the family are saying, and soaks all that up,...he is aware of Andy spiralling down in this abyss..he is aware of his mother...and all the feelings about Jamie, and about his nightmares."

"It's a terrifying thing to come on to the stage knowing you have to somehow show....how does it feel...thinking, talking about Jamie... it's a knife in the wound, you know, when Andy is ranting about Jamie, it's like a knife in the wound for Steven."

"You know it's not very fashionable to have a play where the audience really have to think about what's going on..the audience have to work as hard as the cast."

Another question - Did the cast talk about the play - fill in the blanks. Although this question was aimed at Orlando, Anna answered saying "Endlessly.. that's what rehearsals are for." "Did you know,, in the original production there were no laughs" Anna was determined she wanted laughs in her production.

Another question to Orlando - In the play at the end, Steven says he has decided. Do you know what Steven has decided at the end? Orlando nods and says "Yes", smiling but giving nothing away.

Gareth Farr is then asked about Colin..he gives nothing away either, although the rest of the cast all agree that there is no dentist, and that Colin will not be getting married! Orlando laughs.

Anna finished by saying that David Storey has been very supportive of the production, he wasn't at rehearsals, but made some revisions and a few small cuts here and there. (Now I understand about the small differences I notice from my reading of the play).

Terri then thanked the cast and the audience and everyone clapped. Orlando then left straight away, and didn't pause to sign autographs or for pictures outside the theatre but went straight to the car - he really looked exhausted - he wasn't the only one!

So that was it - I have been looking forward to attending this and I wasn't disappointed! However, I was discussing with several girls the questions we were going to ask but at the last moment one of them jumped in with my question, which really upset me. Oh well.

I saw Orlando arrive and he smiled and gave me that "I know you don't I" look but even better, as he sat on the stage right in front of me, he looked right at me and smiled, albeit a very tired smile, and nodded, and raised his eyebrows, as if to say "Hi ya, glad to see you". He looked my way several times and was obviously wondering why I was scribbling down everything he said. Well Orlando, now you know!

Oops almost forgot the pictures! Clicky
... ... ...
Sorry a couple of them are a little fuzzy!....

Many thanks goes to RosieB. And congrats to her mention in the What's On Stage website...

Orlando Bloom ‘Blessed’ at WOS Q&A???
Date: 27th July 2007
We had a tremendous turnout – both on stage and off – for last night’s post-show Q&A as part of our sold-out Whatonstage.com Outing to Anna Mackmin’s revival of David Storey’s 1969 play In Celebration at the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre. The stalls were filled with what seemed like all of our 215 theatregoers, while those taking questions were director Anna Mackmin with assistant director Kate Lonergan and the entire company – Tim Healy, Lynda Baron, Dearbhla Molloy, Paul Hilton, Gareth Farr, Ciaran McIntyre and, of course, Orlando Bloom, who made his stage debut in the production, which opened earlier this month (See 1st Night Photos, 17 Jul 2007). We had a fascinating discussion in which Mackmin and the cast all shared thoughtful personal insights on their approaches to their characters, dealings with the playwright, the nature of family relationships, 1960s nostalgia, the mining industry and much more.

Unfortunately, we were unable to record this event and thus can’t give you more News coverage highlights as we normally do – so if you missed out on this one, you really missed out and may want to reconsider joining our Theatregoers' Club in order to get advance booking on all Outings! There were some ardent Orlando Bloom fans in attendance, one of whom, Rosemarie Blanshard, has filed her own in-depth report on her fan site, Click! Orlando!. It’s heavily focused on Bloom, of course, but it makes for an interesting read.

It's worth noting that, in all of his responses, Bloom was extremely generous and deferential towards his theatrically accomplished co-stars, in particular Paul Hilton and Gareth Farr who play his brothers. He said he felt “blessed” to work with such a company who have shown him “so much patience” and made him “feel so safe” on stage. He described his character Steven, the silent brother, as “an emotional sponge” who quietly absorbs all that’s going on around him. "I think learning to listen, really listen, and concentrating is one of the lessons I will take away from this experience," said the actor.

Thank you SO much for that T! That review is just fantastic! Such great details. And that's awesome that Orlando seemed to recognize Rosie! That would be awesome to be sitting right in front of him. I'm glad he's always so gracious. Thank you thank you thank you!

Here's more on IC...

My half-price evening with Orlando Bloom

Unhappy families ... Orlando Bloom (left) with Paul Hilton and Dearbhla Molloy in In Celebration. Photograph: Tristram Kenton

I've enjoyed a good run of discount tickets in my search for cheap theatre seats, spending 10p at the Royal Court, a fiver at the Globe and six quid at the Royal Opera House.

But judging by the faces around me, it looks like younger audiences are either being priced out of theatres or put off by the productions. The West End has always been a wallet-worrying experience and, among the overblown, over-priced musicals, the choice of plays is currently disturbingly slim. Cardinal drama The Last Confession was deemed "sturdy but stodgy" by Lyn Gardner, and I get the same stale whiff from The Letter. They're billed as thrillers, but look like middle-aged, middle-of-the-road offerings with the reassuring presence of TV stars (David Suchet and Jenny Seagrove).

At the Duke of York's, another play is banking on a bigger star to fill its stalls. David Storey's 1969 drama In Celebration follows the strained homecoming of three sons for their parents' wedding anniversary in a small Yorkshire mining community. Similarly unlikely to woo a young audience, then, were it not for the presence of Orlando Bloom, making his stage debut. It's a straight-faced and entirely unsexy play, but it's attracting gaggles of fans eager to get an eyeful of Orlando.

The theatre's offering a good deal to ensure a young audience - top-priced seats in the stalls (£45) can be snapped up for £15 if you're under 26. Impressively, these tickets are available in advance rather than just as standbys. It's an initiative that was introduced after the previews, producer Sonia Friedman tells me, because dozens of young fans were hanging around to get a glimpse of Bloom, but couldn't afford a ticket for the play. The marketeers are reaching out to kids by targeting YouTube and MySpace and the play has its own website, complete with a video interview in which the cast are quick to point out that the play is funnier than the synopsis sounds (it's true).

I'm over 26 so have to make do with another ticket deal - the theatre sells 20 "day seats" from 10am. At £20, they're not exactly cheap, but still less than half the original price. A lady outside the theatre isn't convinced. "I paid that much a couple of years ago," she says, "but that was for Sir Ian McKellen."
The audience last night was predominantly female (there were only two other men in my row) and there were indeed lots of young fans. If giddy anticipation hung in the air, so did a vague suspicion about the play. "It's two and a half hours long," groaned the girl behind me. So how does it go down with the kids? At the interval, one teenager moans that it's "just a bunch of conversations"; in the second half, another starts texting before an usher steps in.

This kitchen-sink drama is probably a harder sell than Treats with Billie Piper or the star-cluttered productions of This is Our Youth, but Friedman is right to call In Celebration a "rich, full play" and it deserves to be seen. If some members of last night's audience seemed nonplussed, In Celebration is nevertheless the talk of the Bloom fansites. Alongside the interest in Orlando's side-parting and moustache, fans are engaging with the play and - shock, horror - buying copies of it.

Up the road from the Duke of York's, Spamalot is offering a "pay your age" matinee deal for five to 15-year-olds - another nice initiative to get a younger crowd through the door. But surely the rest of the West End must do their bit to nurture the next generation of theatregoers and improve their dramatic diet by putting on stimulating, quality plays at the right price.

• Chris sat in seat M4 in the stalls and paid £20

Source

I have found the play on amazin.com. It cost about $11 US. I can't wait to read it. If others want to read it maybe we can discuss the play itself at some time.

Thanks for yet another good review T. It's a touch upsetting though that girls who have no appreciation for the arts would go and ruin everyone else's time.

If there is one thing that annoys me beyond all reason, it's texting. It's rude, it's noisy, people even do it while they're driving! Especially since the bright screen stands out in darkness. Maybe I'm over reacting. Either way, they need to teach cellphone etiquette somehow.

If you're over-reacting then so am I. It makes me crazy. I mean during a play they can see you. If you are that bored, get up and leave ... DISCREATELY (sp?) Besides by the time these girls had gone to see the play you can't tell me they hadn't heard about it already. If all they wanted was to catch sight of Orlando, they could have just as easily hung around the stage door. Most of the time he takes the time to stop and sign autographs and greet fans. Spare everyone else your insulting behavior.

Cool

Those are great thank you. He has a group of fans that go see him almost everyday. They have some great shots too. I'm going to have to get organized and get them over here. I was in a car accident a few days ago and it's been maddening getting things handled. But here's one right now that is just a beautiful shot of him full on courtesy of Shana of OrlandoL...

A car accident?! oh be careful next time...hope you're not hurt...

just a little news

Orland Bloom walks around central London and apparently forgot to give an autograph hunter’s pen back.

Earlier this month, readers of Cosmopolitan magazine chose The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean star as the man they would most like to be wooed by. The swashbuckling actor received twenty-one percent of the votes while Prison Break star Wentworth Miller placed second.

Orlando is currently appearing in the play “Celebration” at the Duke of York’s theatre.
