Hollywood stars spice up maiden Doha film festival
Doha is the place to be for movie fans tonight as the Middle East's latest film festival launches with an exciting line-up of stars and films.

Hollywood actors Robert De Niro, Sir Ben Kingsley and JOSH HARTNETT, film directors Martin Scorsese and Danny Boyle and Egyptian superstars Adel Imam and Yusra are just some of the big names in the Qatari capital for the debut of the Doha Tribeca Film Festival (DTFF), which runs until November 4.

Other celebrities, including Egyptian actors Khaled Abol Naga and Ahmed Ezz and Turkish soap stars Kıvanç Tatlıtug and Songül Öden are also set to attend the opening night of the festival, to be held at the Museum of Islamic Art.

Acclaimed director Mira Nair's film, Amelia – starring Hilary Swank, Richard Gere and Ewan McGregor – will be presented, with warm-up entertainment provided by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.

The event is open to the public and the museum's venue can accommodate up to 3,000 film goers, excluding festival VIPs and guests...

Oscar winning actor Sir Ben Kingsley will be cutting the ribbon to officially mark the grand opening of the Whatever It Takes Experience at 5pm on the 30 October at the Grand Hyatt Doha.

Whatever It Takes is a cause-related product campaign which involves more than 600 celebrities or leaders in their field who have been officially invited to become a 21st Century Leader. As an ambassador they create an original piece of art with a strong message of hope.

Sir Ben Kingsley is one of the first recipients of a Doha 21st Century Leader Awards to be presented in a special gala dinner later on that evening, alongside American actor and film producer JOSH HARTNETT, who starred together with the Gandhi actor in the 2006 hit thriller Lucky Number Slevin. The multi-award winning director and producer team of Danny Boyle and Christian Colson, who made last year’s smash hit Slumdog Millionaire, will also be recognised.

The recipients will receive an award entitled “Draw Your Own Time” that has been specially designed by respected artist and sculptor Lorenzo Quinn, who has a long history of being commissioned for public works in Qatar including the “Give & Take” statue marking the entrance of the Aspire Sports Academy in Doha...

Some 800 guests at the Doha 21st Century Leaders Awards gala dinner took part in an auction which raised over $1.26mn yesterday evening, with the proceeds set to be donated to various charitable programmes chosen by the celebrities involved.
The evening began with guests walking down the red carpet into a room featuring an art exhibition of works by a number of international and locally-based artists.
Award winner Josh Hartnett was the last to enter the ballroom, when he joined Sir Ben Kingsley and other guests and officials.

21st Century Leaders Honoured

Ten individuals were recognised yesterday for their humanitarian and environmental efforts, at the first Doha 21st Century Awards ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

Celebrities Ben Kingsley and Josh Hartnett, filmmakers Danny Boyle and Christian Colson, professional tennis players Serena and Venus Williams, opera soprano Monica Yunus, Qataris Eman Ahmed Al Obaidli and Sara Mohammed Al Shamlan, and Palestinian Helen Shehadeh were the recipients of the 21st Century Leaders Awards.

Hartnett said his award spoke of what he can do for the future. Hartnett supports a number of worthy causes and has backed Global Cool, a charity focused on climate change, since its inception...
