I've been trying and trying.. my avatars keep turning out in such bad quality! They look serious bad... and small. 100x100, but still looks weird. I really don't get how the people from the French site, or other places get them to look so good.

Sure. You can do it in Paint. You have the picture saved on your computer, right? Then you right click the picture, and choose: Open With. There you choose Paint. In there you choose the A, means you want to add some writing, and do your thing... Save it, or Save As if you want to have both avatars, one with writing and one without. Upload it again... you know the deal. Simple
