FilmEngine
In the ‘90s the traditional business philosophy age + experience = wisdom was demolished by young Internet upstarts. The new millennium finds the phenomenon spreading from Silicon Valley to Tinseltown. FilmEngine is the best example of this new trend. The LA-based film production company is a team of very young, very ambitious risk-takers who are able to find a blockbuster in a haystack of mediocre scripts. FW tracked them down for a how-to on the new Hollywood:
FilmEngine came to life in February 2001 when independent film and TV production company Roulette Entertainment, co-founded by Anthony Rhulen and actors Josh Hartnett and Elden Henson, joined forces with FilmEngine. FilmEngine, a production/financing company, was created by partners A.J. Dix, who’d supervised deals at New Line, and Bill Shively, a Florida entrepreneur. FilmEngine is credited on O, as well on Bender/Spinks’s upcoming release Cheats. The Butterfly Effect, starring Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart, is the first title produced under the FilmEngine model of acquiring, developing and fully financing in-house. New Line Cinema will release the film in February 2004.
