No sign of MatW at Cannes.

As far as I can tell, The Whale's not made it to Cannes or any other festival. That's such a disappointment. :(

That is SO frustrating. I think this could be HUGE for him, and no one seems to be giving it a chance. It is such an amazing story, if you read about it, and he worked so hard on it too. He was quoted saying he developed that character for 6-7 months!

Poor Josh...

Hi Jenny, I feel the same; looking at the list of films accepted I can't see why MatW couldn't be there too. And what's with Sin City's inclusion... it's already opened in theatres and hardly showcases new talent.

It's really sad. I am afraid that it is not even going to be released, and I am dying to see it.

It's still cool that he made it though. He is really into the "other" roles like that. I respect him for it. It seems like he is a really good person.

Latest from one of the film's producers is that distribution has been fixed for some countries but they are still involved in the deal making process for the US and UK.

What a disappointment! But maybe this will hurry the U.S.and U.K. releases along now that Cannes has been announced. I would love a summer release for this movie if they could choose a date when it would not be swallowed up by a big summer blockbuster.

I was really surprised to see Sin City on the list, as well.

I'm still hoping for a late in the year release date. Anywhere near the summer, specially near the end of it, the movie could be considered a loss cause. Remember WP's late summer Sept. 3rd release date.

I don't know what the distribution problems on this movie are, but I am afraid that they may have missed the mark on this film. Now that Cannes has been announced and MaTW was not included, I hope it doesn't fade into obscurity. Back when there was so much focus on Asperger's Syndrome would have been the prime time for it's release. And April is National Autism Month! I will be upset if this very special movie goes straight to DVD. [img]graemlins/sniff.gif[/img]

"...MATW was accepted at the Palm Beach Film Festival but the producers decided to go for other festivals. I hear they still have an application in to Toronto and others."

Toronto is Sept.8-17. Maybe I just don't understand the extent of the importance of being accepted at one of these film festivals. I know it must be an honor, but I don't get the significance between the festivals and the theater release.

The film will receive more publicity and praise (here's hoping!) prior to the theatre release.

Also, some movie goers feed on the critics comments, so if MatW receives good reviews beforehand, they'd put the film on their 'must-see' list.

^^As I said, I understand that it is an honor to be accepted at these film festivals, and the films do attain critical exposure through them, but I fail to see the direct correlation to the mass critical acclaim and ultimate box office success of a film. For instance, I wonder how many past festival participants have actually gone on to be a Golden Globe or an Academy Award winner, or better still, a major box office success? :confused:

Just wondering.

I think the point at the moment is that MatW doesn't have a domestic distributor (or one for the UK) and the film festivals are a good place for the completed films to be seen, hopefully by a major distributor and for them to buy that up that movie.

With no one to distribute the film it won't get into theatres.

It's simple - the almighty dollar. Everything is money. This is a small independent film. There is no guaranteed box office bank with movies like these. It used to be critical acclaim was most important. But now, it's how much money will it make in its 1st weekend out. So often now if a movie is not #1 1st wk'd, it is considered a flop. Good or bad reviews. So distributors are reluctant to take on small independents. Movies aren't allowed to find their audiences anymore. It's pathetic. [img]graemlins/ohwell.gif[/img]

Was Sideways a box office success? I hadn't heard of the film until it went onto the Golden Globe and Oscars. The critics were raving about it then.

Speaking of Ashton Kutcher, I've already read/heard a couple of Josh/Ashton comparisons recently. Ashton is hot at the moment, but I wish they wouldn't always feel compelled to compare him and Josh.

Statements like this one by Carrie Rickey with the Philadelphia Inquirer make me a little sad:
"(Ashton Kutcher) currently enjoys the career predicted for Josh Hartnett."

It shouldn't, because the career that Ashton's currently heading isn't getting anywhere serious (no offense). They're all comedies, and I find it hard that anyone's taking him seriously as a genuine actor.
So according to Philadelphia Inquirer, how I take it is Josh hasn't been surviving on lousy films.
