Seriously, though. I found this cool set of B&W snapshots, and I thought they would make great avatars. The first one posted above is obviously my favorite, and these others are also cool. If someone could make me 100x100 avatars (with a 1px black border) of these, I'd be indebted to you. (Fully 100x100, please—crop first, resize second to get the best image)

Normally, I'd do this myself with IrfanView but I am on a Mac, and there are no good "free" image editors on the web for Mac. I'd suggest using IrfanView to get the best crop, then copy and paste to Paint to add the 1px black border, then back to IrfanView to save as a 95-100% quality avatar.

Here's the other four. Please help me! (or you can tell me where to go for help)

PS. If anybody cares to avatarize these additionally (125x125, 1px black border), I think I would have to kiss you. These aren't of Scarlett, but of the late, great Heath Ledger.

Please try to get the best crops of all of these that you can. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

^^^^This one in particular, I'd like, please, to keep the full image, just resized to 125px width. Whatever the height percentage will be of the full resized picture doesn't matter. Please also try to crop out the little "AP" at the bottom right, and the little space between Heath and the left-hand edge as well, before you resize.

^^^^Just crop off the top portion of the image (until you get to the bulk of Heath's hair), then resize to 125px height. The resulting width percentage doesn't matter.

^^^^This last image can be trimmed a little bit off the top and right-hand side before resizing. Trim from the bottom as well, before resizing, in order to make it 125x125, please.

Download Irfanview! Use IRFANVIEW!

Once you try it, you'll love it. It makes avatars surprisingly easily, as I described above.

Well, I went digging for programs to emulate what IrfanView does on a PC, and I believe I found a suitable number of programs that each do a few steps in the process of avatar making.

The only part of the process I can't control yet is the final quality. The program into which I open my resized and cropped images is a basic "Paint"-like utility with no control over JPEG quality, so when I dropped a 16KB sized 100x100 avatar and added a border, it came out 12KB. So a loss of 4 KB simply for adding a 1px black border? Definitely some quality loss there, so I'm still working on that.

Anyhow, here's my first effort on my own behalf:

Here's the non-bordered image:

Can you see any qualitative differences between the two, such as would compensate for a 4KB image size loss?

Ok, hold on to your socks, this may surprize you but I have been loading various size images as my avatars and they have been automatically adjusted to an acceptable size. For instance my current avatar was from this image:

640X480 55KB

Maybe Open32 can explain why this is working this way.

I dunno. I may get flak for saying this, but Trotter seems to have a pretty low-quality avatar of Love, and his sister, too. I've maybe mentioned it to him once in the past, but I don't remember what came of it. Maybe I should mention to him and her that this property of the forums exists, and they can upload the full versions of their pics and have the quality preserved once they're resized to fit the avatar space.

Or, if that's already what they've done, then someone needs to make higher-quality avs for them, end of story.

Just as a coincidence, I was searching for an HQ pic of Scarlett that I have, and I found these two additional snapshots from the same magazine shoot as the ones above. I have a GIF in the works for showcasing all these photos in one avatar—mine!

Too bad they're only this size—credit for my discovery of the pics goes to Scarlett Johansson Pictures.

I've noticed that too, when I was too lazy to resize a picture and it worked anyway.
