When People magazine called about the same mysterious blonde, the Nails developed sudden amnesia. But when that house guest is actress Scarlett Johansson, who Esquire Magazine named as the "Sexiest Woman Alive" in 2006, the secret can only last so long. "The first thing she did was go downtown to a restaurant and she got recognized," said Wish Nails. "It was a real drag because people were saying stuff to her like, 'I don't believe it's you. Take off your glasses.' "That was the last time she went out to eat. But the rest of the trips were to Wal-Mart and Albertsons. When I tell you she went to Wal-Mart and Albertsons, she went a lot." Wal-Mart, margaritas and music was the life for Johansson, who spent 33 days in Maurice recording here debut CD at Dockside Studio. Owned by Steve and Wish Nails, Dockside is a 12-acre recording complex hidden along the Vermilion River. Besides local zydeco and Cajun bands, Dockside has recorded B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Irma Thomas, Gatemouth Brown and Mark Knopfler during its 20 years. These stars and Grammy winners chose Dockside for the warm sound created by its vintage, analog recording gear. Johansson, star of The Horse Whisperer, Girl with a Pearl Earring and other films, worked from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily in the studio with producer Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration also performed on the recordings, which Steve Nails describes as cinematic rock. "It's like theater, big screen," said Nails, who sat in on all the sessions. "Lots of heavy bass tones in it. "Without a bass guitar, we used all kind of different instruments to create these sounds. It was a great experiment. Very avant garde." "She sounds like Marilyn Monroe," added Nails. The Nails said besides the early sighting, few people recognized Johansson. They treated her with crawfish boils, fireworks, bonfires and poolside margarita parties at the studio guest house. Boyfriend Ryan Reynolds visited for two weeks. Studio manager Korey Richey, who often brought Johansson around town, described her as a down-to-earth "studio mom" as she worked with the musicians. "She made sure they ate and had their fruit salad," said Richey. "She thought Soop's (Restaurant) in Maurice had some of the best food. She had the fried shrimp po-boy and just moaned the whole time." Steve Nails predicts her CD will go platinum and win a Grammy, which would be the seventh for Dockside. He looks forward to working with her again. "She was sweet as cherry pie. She was wonderful. She's like my stepdaughter." http://www.theadvertiser.com/apps/pb...707130311/1024 |

Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration are also reportedly involved 10 hours ago Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio is producing an album for Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson, it's been reported. Johansson has already spent over a month in a Louisiana recording studio working on the material which also features members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration, according to Pitchfork. The actresses sound is "avant garde" and "very Marilyn Monroe" says Dockside Studio owner Steve Nails, and he reckons it could even go on to win a Grammy. Johansson famously appeared onstage with The Jesus And Mary Chain for the song 'Just Like Honey' at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival earlier this summer, and other reports say that she has also been working on an album of Tom Waits covers. Meanwhile, Sitek recently completed work on the forthcoming album from Foals. |

October 7th is the release date in the U.S. and Austrailia Johansson will also show her muscial talents in the coming months. For almost a year, she has worked on an album of Tom Waits covers to be released on October 7 in the US and in Australia next year through Warner Music. "I've always been a huge fan of Tom Waits,'' she says. "And I had this golden opportunity to make an album however I wanted. "I see Tom Waits as being a composer of modern standards, so it seemed appropriate that I could interpret his songs. "Obviously, it's not an album where I'm trying to sound like him. That would be impossible. "He writes such beautiful songs and incredible melodies, and they're so cinematic and open-ended, so I felt it would be something that I could be inspired by.'' |
