Default Mary Queen of Scots News

This movie was supposed to film this summer, but has been pushed back. Some news today out of Cannes:

Scarlett Johansson is Still Mary Queen of Scots
Posted May 17th 2007 3:31PM by Monika Bartyzel
Filed under: Drama, Casting, Deals, Cannes, Scripts & Screenwriting

It looks like Scarlett Johansson is having a bit of a love affair with Europe (beyond her flirtation with Woody Allen). She's got his upcoming, yet still untitled, Spanish project and a role as a Greek gladiatrix. But her big obsession seems to be with historical Britain and France -- especially the turmoil around the crown and King Henry VII. When Kevin Kelly talked about her Delorean-traveling ways, she was attached to The Other Boleyn Girl, Mary Queen of Scots and Napoleon and Betsy. The first has gone into post-production, and the second is slowly heading forward.

They now have a company attached to the film. That news and the writer's opinion continue here:

Cheers for the news Bill. Didn't know about her being a gladiatrix though.

I had sort of heard about this movie, but didn't pay too much attention to it.

From Linlithgo Today:

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson could be making her way to Linlithgow… if a bid by West Lothian Council succeeds. It was announced at the Cannes Film Festival this week that the top actress has been signed to play Mary, Queen of Scots — the tragic monarch who was born at Linlithgow Palace.

The new movie is set to become one of the most significant historical films about Scotland since Braveheart.

And, keen to get a slice of the big-budget Hollywood epic, the council is planning to invite the production company to film at the birthplace of Mary Stuart.

Linlithgow Councillor, Provost Tom Kerr said: “Scarlett Johansson is the latest in a long line of top film stars to play Mary, Queen of Scots.

“This will be a major international production which could rival the success of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart.”

“We plan to make the production company aware of the importance of Linlithgow’s connection with Mary, Queen of Scots and ask them to consider filming in our historic town.

”It would be yet another coup for tourism in the Royal Burgh.”

Fellow Linlithgow Councillor Martyn Day, who represents the council on the Edinburgh and Lothians area tourism partnership, is also keen for the town to cash in.

He said: “We would certainly offer help with the filming of this important new movie.

“A new film about Mary, Queen of Scots could help give a massive boost to tourism in West Lothian and attract thousands of additional visitors to Linlithgow.”

Mary Queen of Scots movie lost due to Hollywood strike.

by ianharrywebb | December 18, 2007 at 11:00 am | 47 views | add

SCARLETT Johansson was to follow in a long list of stars who have tried to capture the essence of the doomed royal on screen. But due to the writer's dispute the film [due to be filmed in the summer 2008] will now be cancelled. Mary Queen of Scots was born in Linlithgow Palace near Edinburgh. Edinburgh where the future King of Scotland and England James VI was born in its castle. With the success of Elizabeth it was hoped that a story of her Scots cousin Mary would also prove to be success at the box office.

Well that's a shame. Her life story, if acurately portrayed, would be very interesting in light of the Elizabeth films and the Other Boleyn Girl film.

I really don't understand how the writers strike could just cancell this. First off, wouldn't it be written Before the project was even put together? and second, the strike will not last forever, so why not just pospone it.

Its probably a matter of scheduling. An actress of Johanson's statue has lots of commitments. I would think that a preliminary script would have to exist; they would have to have something to get funding for the project before they even approached actors, directors, etc.

Ok, So I thought this project was dead, now this news is coming out:

Phillip Noyce Signs On To Direct Scarlett Johansson in Mary, Queen of Scots

January 9th, 2008 by Lucy
In Sections

For a while now, Scarlett Johansson has been signed up to the film Mary, Queen of Scots, but had no director. Well, today it seems she’s finally found what she was looking for. Director Phillip Noyce has been bought onboard to helm the drama from a script written by Jimmy McGovern.
The film will follow the story of the Roman Catholic who reigned as Scotland’s Queen for just nine months back in 1587 before she was imprisoned on charges of plotting to murder Elizabeth I.
It seems Johansson is following a trend with her latest film roles. She’s starred in period movies The Pledge and The Other Boleyn Girl so I think it’s safe to say that Johansson would be the perfect choice for the film.
The film will begin shooting in London and Scotland this year.

I wonder how he will do with a period film. His previous experience has been in the action/adventure genera (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger).

Bid to get Scarlett's Mary film shot in Lothian

TOP Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson could be heading to West Lothian to film her latest movie.

Last year, it emerged the actress had been signed up to play Mary, Queen of Scots, the tragic monarch who was born at Linlithgow Palace. The movie's production team are currently touring the UK looking for locations and West Lothian Council plans to get in touch to put their case.

Provost Tom Kerr said: "This will be a major international production which could rival the success of Mel Gibson's Braveheart.

"We plan to make the production company aware of the importance of Linlithgow's connection with Mary, Queen of Scots and to consider filming in our historic town."

In 2004, scores of fans descended on the tiny West Lothian village of Dechmont when George Clooney was in the area as producer of the film The Jacket.

Martyn Day, the council's development and transport leader, said a new film about Mary Stuart would give a massive boost to the region.

He said: "We would certainly offer help with the filming of this important new movie and we will be contacting the production company to invite them to visit Linlithgow."

Isn't that where Legolas (Orlando Bloom) was from in Lord of the Rings?
