Other stars such as Reese Witherspoon and Kelli O'Hara are said to be on the wish list as well for what's being described as a "sexy revival" of the show. Auditions are said to begin in a few weeks time. Scarlett Johansson has long expressed interest in starring in a Broadway show and is said to be a big fan of musical theatre. Her name was last bandied about for the London revival of The Sound of Music, for which she met with producer Andrew Lloyd Webber, but a deal was never reached. Johansson has limited stage credits, but was enrolled in the Lee Strasberg Institute where she had the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience. Before Scarlett got a film role she made her professional acting debut opposite Ethan Hawke in the off-broadway production of 'Sophistry' at the age of 8. South Pacific is a musical play, with music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. When it first opened on Broadway on April 7, 1949, it was produced by Leland Hayward and directed by Joshua Logan. It ran for more than five years with 1,925 performances; at the time it closed, it was the fifth-longest running show in Broadway history. [1] It is generally considered to be one of the greatest musicals of all time [2] [3], and a number of its songs, such as "Bali Ha'i," "Younger than Springtime," and "Some Enchanted Evening," have become worldwide standards. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950. The play is based on two short stories by James A. Michener from his book Tales of the South Pacific, which itself was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1948. Remember, it is a musical. So, if Scarlett gets the part, she's going to be doing a lot of singing. | |

Hollywood beauty Scarlett Johansson has fuelled reports she will star in the New York City production of South Pacific, after declaring her love for the musical during an interview. Last month (Mar07), the New York Post reported Johansson was in talks to play Us Navy nurse Nellie Forbush in a revival of the musical at the Lincoln Center, which is scheduled to open in January 2008. In an interview with the latest UK edition of Glamour magazine, Johansson admits she's a huge fan of the Rodgers And Hammerstein show, but she has a problem with the heroine's surname, which shares a similarity to Us President George W.
