Two ambitious cops, Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) and Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett), investigate the shocking murder of an aspiring young starlet. With a corpse so mutilated that photos are kept from the public, the case becomes an obsession for the men, and their lives begin to unravel. Blanchard's relationship with his girlfriend Kay (Scarlett Johansson) deteriorates, while Bleichert finds himself drawn to the enigmatic Madeleine (Hilary Swank), a wealthy woman with a dark and twisted connection to the victim. And The Departed, with a budget of $90M, and rated 8.5 only made $76M in the first 3 weeks. Looks like The Black Dahlia ($20M in the first 3 weeks) wasn't the only "failure". | |

As to the IMDb rating, IMDb claims they have a formula for weeding out ratings which skew the average. However until the number of votes reaches a significant number that average is generally higher than it eventually will be. The best indication of how successful a film is would be an inflation adjusted gross coupled to attendance and number of theaters showing the film. Film is an art form. In the final analysis its not the money or the ratings or the awards, its whether you as an individual enjoyed and appreciated the film. (Ok, I'll take my meds now.) | |
