Scarlett Johansson Record Deal in the Works

Scarlett Johansson and Lindsay Lohan are about to have something in common.

Scarlett, I am told, has signed a deal to make her first record. "Scarlett Sings Tom Waits" is being recorded now and through the winter, with a possible release next spring from Rhino Records' recently reactivated Atco label. The eventual release date will be coordinated with Johansson's movie schedule.

Fear not, though. Unlike some other recent pop tarts, Scarlett — who turns 22 next month — can actually sing; she is no Paris Hilton. Also her choice of material is a tad more sophisticated. She's making a whole album of songs by Tom Waits, one of the premier singer-songwriters in the business.

Let's just hope the whole thing won't get "lost in translation." But my spies say that Scarlett has a lovely, whispery delivery that carries a tune nicely and is suited to Waits' unusual lyrics. No word yet on the producer, but she'd be smart to listen to Rikki Lee Jones' fine 1993 album, "Traffic in Paradise," for inspiration.

I don't know what to make of this. Suddenly I'm coming up with images of John Travolta, David Hasselhoff, Bruce Willis, and should I say it....Paris Hilton.
Who knows...I'm very afraid of what might come of this.

recently found an MP3 of what was said to be her.
it just sounds so much like the original. but if shes doing a cover of a song called 'summertime' this could be it.
so i'm putting it to the experts

In a recent interview, Scarlett herself has confirmed that the project is ON:

London, Nov 6 - Actress Scarlett Johansson has confirmed that she is using the free time in between movie shoots to record an album.

According to contactmusic.com, Johansson sang in the movie 'Lost in Translation' with her co-star Bill Murray in a karaoke scene. The actress, who is a big fan of singer-songwriter Waits, has now signed a deal to make her first record titled 'Scarlett sings Tom waits'.

She is eager to do justice to the music and is taking as much time as possible to get it just right.

She said: 'It's coming along. There is no rush to get it out there. We're taking our time - doing a week here and week there. I just love his music.'

Do I smell a celebrity trend? Scarlett would have done well to keep her voice to herself, but as it is, there is hardly an actress out there now who hasn't dabbled in music or won't do so in the future. It's become a world of actress/singers these days, as there seems to be no market for either specific type itself. It's both or none. Sad...

In lieu of that, I'll be eagerly seeking out her album when it hits...

Everone thinks they can take on another profession. How many singers have we seen who think they can act. Let her give it a try. We'll know next spring how good it is.
