Default Possible New Film Role: Gellar in talks for 'Veronika'

Gellar in talks for 'Veronika'
Actress in negotiations to star in indie drama

By TATIANA SIEGEL

Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final negotiations to star in the indie drama "Veronika Decides to Die."
Story centers on a severely depressed woman who rediscovers her will to live after learning that she has only days left due to the irreparable damage done to her heart as a result of her recent suicide attempt.

Larry Gross and Roberta Hanley adapted the screenplay from Paulo Coelho's novel.

Emily Young ("Kiss of Life") is set to direct the project; Kate Bosworth was previously attached to star.

Sriram Das is producing.

Gellar was recently seen in ThinkFilm's "The Air I Breathe" and can soon be seen in the Yari Film Group romantic thriller "Possession."

OMG ! That would be awesome, Veronika Decides to Die is by a brazilian author, Paulo Coelho, which means that there's a possibility that Sarah might promote the movie here ! (...lol....my logic works in a crazy way....)

Thumbs up Thanks To Leigh For Finding This!

Thanks, Apollo!

Several quotes about the story and the author:

"In his brilliant novel about the aftermath of a young woman's suicide attempt, Paulo Coelho explores three perennial themes: conformity, madness, and death. Twenty-four-year-old Veronika lives in Slovenia, one of the republics created by the dissolution of Yugoslavia. She works as a librarian by day, and by night carries on like many single women - dating men, occasionally sleeping with them, and returning to a single room she rents at a convent. It is a life, but not a very compelling one. So one day, Veronika decides to end it. Her failed attempt, and her inexplicable reasons for wanting to die, land her in a mental hospital." -- Variety

"In this deceptively unadorned tale, narrated in a charmingly ironic style, Paul Coelho plumbs the profoundest depths of mores, madness and meaning. Thanks to Coelho's literary mastery and philosophical acuity, this engaging novel attains greatness via simplicity--a marvelous achievement! "
—Lou Marinoff, author of Plato, Not Prozac!

" Coelho does not so much address his readers as confide in them. His style is a kind of eavesdropping, full of lyrical whisperings and confessional asides. "
—Sunday Express (UK)

" With Veronika Decides to Die Coelho's legend keeps growing. "
—La Presna (Argentina)

" A touching fable about learning to live in the face of death. "
—Kirkus Reviews

^ Sahem that Apollo, but still noteworthy. As for the character, will we see Sarah do an accent? As Veronika's Slovenian?

Thanks for finding those, Apollo! I'll bet they film it in NYC.

Here's something Eleagold found:

"Funny, pointless piece of trivia:

According to imdb, the actress (Yoko Maki) who played Veronika (aka Towa, apparently) in the Japanese adaptation of the book, is the actress who played Yoko in "The Grudge"."
