The fact that the author seems to be on good terms with the producers adds to that impression since he was reluctant to allow adaptions of his books in the past precisely because of how they would be adapted

It's nice to see that the author is. Remember Anne Rice freaking out when Tom Cruise was named as Lestat? Thankfully that's not the case here.

PW: You just finished filming "Veronika Decides To Die" with Sarah Michelle Gellar in New York City -- how was that?

Jonathan: It was definitely not easy. My character is in a mental facility for the first two-thirds of the film, completely disengaged with reality. It was very tough for both of us. But the last third is wonderful because both characters come to life. We're totally in love, dancing around the city, imbibing life. You can never predict how these things are going to turn out, but the production aspect was terrific.

It's even too early with the January date for Sundance

While I was looking at that IMDB page I noticed an interesting addition to the credits

After they added underwater camera operator they have added this now
first assistant camera: underwater scenes
