Five Years After Wedding, Sarah Michelle Gellar Changes Last Name to Prinze
Thursday November 15, 2007

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has changed her famous three-part moniker as a fifth wedding anniversary present to actor Freddie Prinze Jr. The couple was wed September 1, 2002.

A source close to the 30-year-old star tells Us Weekly,"She officially changed her name to Sarah Michelle Prinze" in honor of the occasion.

"On their anniversary, she showed [Freddie] her new driver's license," the source tells Us. "It was so sweet."

Really? So she's not gone Sarah Michelle Gellar Prinze first then? Like Courtney Arquette did? If it's true, then it'll be wierd to see that. I can understand her reasons behind it too. So her initials will be SMS then? Thanks for the info Apollo.

Yeah good point Ed, as it may confuse some people if she has decided to use Prinze in a acting capacity straight away.

I think many professional women do that (actresses, lawyers, doctors) - use maiden name for career but use husband's name for personal reasons. And Sarah's personal life is so separate from her professional life that I think its great that she did this. It definitely shows commitment to Freddie and will help later when they have children....

I thought she had changed her name when she got married.....she said she would on her Howard Stern interview back in 2002....The other strange thing about this is that on her Lucky interview there were mentions that Sarah's last name was already Prinze...something about sending thank you cards to everybody and signing SMP...

As a male fan of hers she will always be Sarah Michelle Gellar..and that`s the way it will always be.

we'll just have to wait and see if one of these days a movie will come with her name as sarah michelle prinze. if it does happen will her name be changed on this board as well?

FYI....saw this posted at Whedonesque

People Magazine, December 3rd edition, printed a clarification indicating that Sarah Michelle Gellar had just changed her name to Prinze in her private life. She will remain SMG for professional purposes. Sorry, I can't find an online link to the People article. Ironic, given the twenty or more erroneous tabloid links that I can find.

Heh. That's usually how it goes. I think most people knew the truth when the news broke, however, despite the outcry.
