It was a much older John Ford classic, "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon" and that line was muttered by the old Top Sergeant, Victor Mclaughlin, as he took a snort from his whiskey flask! I can see why you might think it was "The Shootist" as that was The Duke's last film and he was supposedly dying of cancer (which was kind of prophetic in a way).
