The father of teen actress Lindsay Lohan will not go to jail for allegedly beating his brother-in-law during a communion party in Merrick in May, his attorney and a Nassau prosecutor said today.
Plea negotiations in the case against Michael Lohan are close to being completed, said Assistant District Attorney Barbara Kornblau. Instead of jail, Kornblau said the district attorney's office is requiring that Lohan enter an in-patient treatment program for drugs and alcoholism, Kornblau said.
Lohan's case was put off until Oct. 27 to allow him to find a treatment program that has an available bed.
In an interview outside the Mineola courthouse, Lohan said his famous daughter is not embarrassed about the troubles he has gotten into lately, which included allegations that he punched a sanitation worker in Manhattan and skipped out on a $3,834 bill.
"My dad's a big boy. He has made his mistakes and he has rebounded from them," Lohan quoted his daughter as saying, "and she loves me and I love her."
Lohan, whose daughter is the star of "Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday," was arrested June 3 and charged with second-degree assault and two counts of aggravated harassment. Lohan allegedly used a shoe to beat his brother-in-law, Matt Sullivan, while the men were attending a communion party for Lohan's son. |
