Jessica Headed For Broadway? November 8, 2007 4:59:11 AM
Jessica Alba, star of small and big screens, is reportedly in talks to appear in a Broadway play. Not content with conquering television (Dark Angel for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe) and movies (Fantastic Four, Into the Blue, Good Luck Chuck) Jessica appears to be ready to take on the Great White Way.
Michael Riedel of The NY Post has released information that producers are speaking with Jessica about taking a starring role in the David Mamet play Speed-the-Plow this Spring 2008.
Speed-the-Plow is set in Hollywood and centers around two big time movie producers Bobby Gould and Charlie Fox and their secretary Karen (the role Alba would take). Bobby is deciding what his next movie will be; a blockbuster or a adaptation of a intellectual non-commercial novel. The three characters lives become tangled in a web of lies, sex and power. Ultimately the play is about ethics, spirituality and art vs. commerce.
The role of Karen was previously played by another big celebrity. Back in 1988 Madonna (yes, music diva Madonna) made her Broadway debut in the production with theater veterans Ron Silver and Joe Mantegna. While Madonna was widely criticized for her performance, the show was nominated for a Best Play TONY and Silver won a Best Actor TONY for his work in the play. A bit of advice for Jessica; don't call Madonna for help with the part.
No word on who will co-star with Ms. Alba, but producers have floated the names of former The Sopranos stars James Gandolfini and Michael Imperioli.
Lately it seems young movie and television actress have been making there way to New York to gain acting credibility by starring in plays. Nicole Kidman took on David Hare's Blue Room a few years back and Julianne Moore tackled The Vertical Hour. This season alone we have Claire Danes (Pygmalion) and Jennifer Garner (Cyrano) taking on plays. It seems Ms. Alba might like to leave behind the bubble gum movies and step into more serious dramas. A Broadway play might just be the way to show Hollywood what kind of acting chops she really has. Sometimes an actress needs to win a TONY in order to be considered for a movie where she might win an OSCAR.
Personally I think Jessica Alba demonstrated all her gifts in the remarkable television show Flipper. Did anyone see that show? It only ran for 10 episodes. She doesn't need to do a Broadway show to prove she can act; Jessica Alba just needs to pull out the old VHS tapes of Flipper and I think Hollywood will be knocking down her door to cast her in Oscar worthy movies. |
