Default Celebs design handbags to benefit natural resources

Celebs design handbags to benefit natural resources
Associated Press

Want to get your hands on a hot celebrity handbag? Stars such as Jessica Alba, Naomi Watts, Kirsten Dunst, Carmen Electra and the cast of "Desperate Housewives" autographed and decorated bags -- often using their own handprint as the focal point -- as part of a fundraiser for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Handbags for the Earth is a campaign spearheaded by beauty company Aveda and fashion company Project Alabama to benefit the NRDC. All proceeds go toward programs to build environmental awareness.

The cotton bags, made from recycled T-shirts and balsa wood handles, will be auctioned on eBay from June 5-15.

"Being a proponent for the environment is no longer 'crunch' or 'out of style," says Phil Gutis, NRDC's director of communications. "We think Handbags for the Earth is perfect eco-chic activism."

I can't get on board w/this one. I just refuse to subscribe to the "world is going to end thanks to the evils of men" environmental beliefs. When the co-founder of Green Peace says he thinks they've twisted what he originally created, you know somethin's amock IMO. It's nice Jess cares but it's just not a cause I really believe in myself.

The only thing I care about is the price of gas once I get my driver's license this summer. Then, I can start worrying.

Thinking about the earth is something everyone should do. It's going to hell in a handbasket. The way the world is going due to global warming and environmental issues like that make me not even want to have kids.

cheers

I'd also like to be burried in the ground instead of cremated that way the future of homosapiens will have some fossil fuels leftover.

cheers

The problem w/global warming is that it's entirely based on scientific tests only done since we could start measuring stuff. No one says what caused the 6 or so ice ages that happened BEFORE man arrived or the fact that they've recently found microbiological evidence that the arctic was a jungle once long before man showed up on the scene.

If you look at temperature and climate shifting data on a graph (I've done this in college), you can see it's had an ebb and flow up/down for centuries way before man appeared. The way I look at it is this: they've put so many environmental laws in place since we decided WE were the problem in the 70's how could things possibly be worse now, 30 years later?! It doesn't make logical sense. The laws haven't been repealed, they've multiplied. The last major disaster was the Exxon Mobil mess in Alaska in the 80's!

Little by little the Earth is changing. Only the inhabitants can put their best foot forward and make a difference.

Of course nature sets in naturally. But "we" have been polluting the earth with toxins and such before and after 70's. Things are worse because people still pollute and etc. ie: Everytime a shuttle goes into space, it destroys a piece of our earth's crust. There is a giant hole above Canada where these holes have been formed. The people that live under the holes have been known to develop skin cancer and things like that due to the sun's radiation. The earths crust protects us alot more than people think. Also there was a study done since the 70's about how people have used less and less of airisol spray cans and the studies have shown that our ozone layer has gotten better. Everyday in Brazil acres and acres of the amazon rainforest is cut down and destroyed. The amazon rainforest is so importanat that it makes up 75% of the earths oxygen levels. What going to happen when it's all gone? Nevermind the fact that there are new species of life found in it everyday. There could be a cure for cancer or aids in the amazon rain forest.

I'm not saying I'm gonna go buy a hybrid. I'm just saying that even a little bit of effort goes a long way. The world will never get better as long as we're on that's for sure. But there are things that can be done to make it less painful on the earth such as throwing away plastic and non-biodegradable items. God forbid we get into another world war and then the complete race of mankind becomes extinct due to atomic bombs being dropped all over the place. That cannot possibly be good for the earth either.

cheers

I just hate it when celebs get involved with politics and special causes. If I strongly disagree with them, I usually end up not buying their products. If they just did their job, things would be better.

I think alot of times celebs just do it to set an example than to be like, "Look at me I'm resourceful and famous!!" After all, they are rich and we can't be destroying the beautiful earth that they live on.

cheers

That's my main point: I don't mind people feeling one way or the other, I just wish celebs would STOP feeling the need to use their positions to push agendas on everyone. We pay to see you act in movies, play non-political music (contrary to what Bob Dylan may believe) etc. that helps us escape problems of the world, not be reminded of it. If you believe in supporting the stuff that's fine, but I wish they wouldn't use platforms to push everyone their way. Those comments from Jess on this stuff, while I do admire her for standing up for what she believes in, really made me question her in this context. Just talk about your work or personal life and stay away from those touchy subjects, PLEASE!
