Alba talks about uncle in Iraq

Budding movie star Jessica Alba has so far resisted the urge to make political pronouncements.
But when I ran into her over the weekend - at a Mercedes-Benz-sponsored polo match at the Bridgehampton Polo Club - she was very worried about her Uncle Nick.

Since January, she told me, Nick Stanisci has been serving with the U.S. Army in Taji, Iraq, about 20 miles northwest of Baghdad.

"He has three children who are right now in their most formative years - 19, 16 and 15 years old - and at any moment he could be no more," Alba told me yesterday. "We don't know what kind of food he's getting to eat, if he's wearing the same clothes every day and taking a shower once a week, or sleeping with his machine gun."

Alba added: "I just don't have a great feeling about what we're doing in Iraq. I don't know why we're there. Didn't we just give the power back over there? Why are we still there?"

Alba, 23, said she's determined to vote in November for the first time in a presidential election, even though she'll be filming "The Fantastic Four" in Canada. "I'll just cross the border into Washington State." (She might have better luck with an absentee ballot.)

While Alba wouldn't reveal if she's voting for President Bush or John Kerry, she did give a pretty good hint: "I don't want to upset my family. My family believes the opposite of what I believe. ... They're all Republicans."

But Alba said her extended family is very close. "Uncle Nick is 43 years old. He's married to my dad's sister. He's been going to school to be an accountant, and he was an amateur soccer player. He signed up four years ago in California. He's Northern Italian, and he heard he could get a free trip to Italy."

Instead Uncle Nick got a free trip to Iraq.

Alba said Uncle Nick phoned her from there on her birthday in April - and the call was extremely emotional.

"Usually he's always wisecracking, making jokes, telling me funny movie ideas. But this time he sounded so sad. It was 'I love you and I miss you.' He was really upset. It was horrible."

I hope that she'll make the choice that she feels is right, not what her parents would expect of her.

tyvm for posting that story. i hope for her sake (and for everyone else with friends/family there) that him and everyone else there makes it home safely and soon.
i hope she does get a chance to vote. after recently seeing fahrenheit 9/11, i am seriously considering voting myself. i have never voted too and im probably one of the oldest people that posts here. (sry, im not telling my age. lol)

I don't want to click that link, I might be inadvertently supporting someone with whom I disagree. We can't have that, can we? But I'll risk it as soon as you've seen the film.

Quid Pro Quo.

I know what the film is about and what it stands for. I've seen "Bowling for Columbine" and I get Moore's shtick. I have friends who have seen the movie and have consistently told me the same thing: propaganda.

The only positive thing that it offers - the reality of war - can be found for free by seeing pictures of Fallujah firefights on the news.

The link is completely free, and you aren't supporting anyone because I posted it in the politics forum. You don't have to agree with it, it's just free intellectual material. The author has nothing to gain, except admiration and recognition for his writing. Moore on the other hand is driven by his own frustration and self-hate by trying to play on people's ignorance to influence an election. So the two aren't really comparable and it's not quite Quid Pro Quo.

No cause I know it's trying to make Bush look bad. Hell I even read that Moore is going to get his Oscar taken away cause he made **** up on "Bowling for Columbine".

I found it interesting that she has such a high loyalty to her family that she would feel voting for a Democrat in a "Republican family".
