| Senior Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I'll bite anyway... I'm asian and I have no special bias for asian actors (any of the few out there). I feel so incredibly ashamed of not sticking to my own people! Yeah ok. We're in America. She was born American. If she doesn't CONSIDER herself Latina, who are you to say she SHOULD ? There's a difference between disowning your own heritage altogether vs. simply not living in it day to day. One of her good friends in the industry is Eva Longoria (Spanish) and she obviously had a special connection with Robert Rodriguez (Sin City director)... read her comments about him and you'll know she was proud of his background. On top of this kind of stuff, she's taking Spanish classes, so it's not like she's turning a blind eye to her Spanish background. And by the way, she's only 50% Mexican/Spanish. I wonder if you knew her mom wasn't? If she claims to be Latina, what kind of respect does that show for her mom's side? Let's add this up. Born in America, with a mix of Mexican/Spanish/French/Dutch... and you want her to call herself Latina... sounds a bit selfish to me. Someone needs to do more homework before spewing hatred for someone they know so little about. I'll add one more thing. Those in the entertainment industry who do segregate themselves by OPENLY saying "I'm (enter race here)" are not doing themselves any favors. Sure you have your devoted entourage of ethnic followers, but you're basically saying to everyone else... "I'm a proud (enter race here) and other races don't much matter to me". Guess what ? If you're a good entertainer or whatever it is you do, nobody cares what background you are. YOU WILL BE LIKED JUST THE SAME. (At least the ones who aren't bigots) Ask yourself, do you like Latin actors/actresses moreso than others primarily for that reason ? If everyone were like you, the most successful people on this Earth would be of the race who has the most members. Doesn't really work, does it ? I'm not saying you can't be proud of your background, but to choose to hate someone who doesn't necessarily identify with it is absurd. Print that in your school paper, maybe someone from "your school" (or probably more specifically your Latin American club there) will learn or realize there's a whole world out in America. | I can't say much about the identifying yourself w/a specific race argument as I'm an ordinary Polish/German Midwestern blond-haired, brown-eyed white boy. But, I will say this: I believe this is what Jess has meant in past interviews when she said she wasn't accepted by any sides of her family's races, including the Latino paternal side. I DON'T believe she's making calculated efforts to permanently "white-wash" herself (although I personally find the brunette look so much more alluring on her as I've said before but hair color is not what makes a person attractive to me alone). As much as you see celebrities preaching togetherness, acting like they identify w/ordinary people at political rallies and such, alligning themselves w/diverse groups in front of cameras, etc. the fact remains that Hollywood itself is a very closed, calculated atmosphere which is extremely hard to crack like Jess has referenced. This is evidenced by the fact that great actors like Denzel Washington and Halle Berry DON'T get Oscars for their best works (Malcolm X and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) and then, under extreme outside pressure to see minorities begin to finally get recognized w/Oscars, they are "awarded" Oscars for work like Training Day (in which Washington acted like an urban black man-so demeaning in my view) and Monster's Ball (coincidently Berry's first neud scene and a very weak movie). Angela Bassett should have gotten one for What's Love Got to do With It but also didn't. Hopefully Jess is the beginning of a group of young women and men that can help to change that atmosphere but it's going to take time and playing the "game" w/them a bit to get in which isn't their fault. You're a proud, attractive latina woman, UCLA, which is great. But until you've encountered the high school clique that is Hollywood head on, as Alba has, it's hard to say how one that wants to succeed would approach that. Do you remain true to your roots (which Jess really can't as RH mentioned w/her multitude of racial backgrounds, not just latina) and probably be shut out, or play a little bit to get ahead and then advance others that come after you by doing so. She has said she wants to start producing movies someday and that could be where she introduces more minorities like yourself to mainstream success. I don't think she's ever said "I am latina, hear me roar." Maybe I'm wrong but that's two cents coming from the self-proclaimed Knuckle-Dragging Courteous Neandethal that is me |

| Hey, she has an individual mind. There's nothing wrong or racist about that. What we least should do is attack and make her feel unwelcome here (at least as long as the barrage doesn't continue to infinity in which case we don't want the mood of the forum to suffer for it). We've all voiced some nastiness in our own ways (need I bring up the many comments about "Him?") regarding Jess and, whether we regret them or not, it's nice to know we have a place to vent at times. Let's not break the spirit of what we have here and get nasty on her. I doubt Jess would turn it into a shouting match if she were here and would respect her opinion being the good person we believe her to be. Now, if she insults Eliza Dushku too, it may be on! | As much as i hate to admit...i think she kinda has a point. I mean i love jessica and all but she is half mexican (50 %). She HAS to consider herself at least hispanic in some way....but in reality she doesnt want to be considered a latina/hispanic (god knows why)...and i know if i grew up w/ a mexican dad...i would at least know some spanish (i am hispanic)...but she cant speak spanish for nothing... but i still love jessica no matter what...but i just wish she could be proud to be from a hispanic background and whatever the other half is...lol... but im just stating my opinion... |

| Uh, this is really a tough one. In a way I agree with you UCLA, but then again, she isn't 100% Latina if I'm not mistaking, isn't her mami French/Dutch? If she doesn't know Spanish, it's probably because her dad didn't bother to get her invovled with the Mexican/Hispanic culture. I for one, yes, both my parents are Puerto Rican with pride, I was born in Puerto Rico but raised in Jersey, I speak Spanish and eat my rice and beans once in a while of course :D but I don't think she should take all the blame. If you were to look at it this way; Jessica representing the Latinos all the time, the Euro/Caucasian race are probably going to think the same way you're thinking, UCLA. It should be balanced, I agree, but then again, did the father's side of the family teach her to have pride? I guess it's obvious that she must be at least part Hispanic because of her face, so in a way I understand why the Latinos may dislike that she doesn't represent, but hey, what can we do about it? ;) [ September 30, 2005, 04:29 PM: Message edited by: JcBoriGurl ] |

| UCLA Latina, were you like Jess's high school arch nemesis or something? because I don't think anyone else has ever brought this up before you. I'm asian but I don't always consider myself asian because I don't speak Chinese (in UCLA's words). And why does it matter what she considers herself. She can think of herself as whatever she wants. |
