| Crazy About Jim...so cute ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | On the ‘Ghost Whisperer‘ season premiere this Friday night, Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) will give birth to baby boy Aiden (Connor Gibbs), who has his mother’s paranormal gifts - and maybe more. The episode, which was directed by Hewitt, will also take a leap into the future - with far-reaching consequences. Executive Producer P.K. Simonds talked to us about the time shift, the child’s special powers, and the startling changes we can expect to come for each character. What’s coming up this first episode? Well I don’t want to spoil anything, but I can tell you this. It’s exciting for fans to get a chance to meet this child - see what he looks and acts like. Most especially to see what he can do. What we’ve promised from the beginning is that he’ll be able to do more than she can do. That turns out to be true. We find out how and what that thing is. It’s only the first step, though, in a progression of revelations about what it is he can see and what that means for all of them. One of the fun things about watching that episode is getting a clearer sense of where we’re headed. Last season, there were dark forces who were going to great length in stealing the book and they are still interested in getting it, which puts people in jeopardy. There’s also a ghost in the first episode who is very interested in Aiden and they have a connection that even Aiden doesn’t understand. The nature of the connection ultimately reveals everything - for now - about his special gifts. Catch up on season four with Fancast How did Connor (Aiden) take to Jennifer Love (Melinda)? Well, Love is terrific with kids. She’s very much in touch with her own inner child in all the best ways. And so, they immediately struck up a playful and fun relationship. Same thing with Connor and David Conrad, they’re like best buddies. On screen and off screen, they all have a great time together. What’s great about Connor is he’s just natural. When you’ll watch him, you won’t think that he’s pretending. He’s a gifted, natural actor, just like his character. What was it like to jump in time and into the future? We’re doing that this episode, and Aiden will be five years old. There was maybe a second or two when the actors realized that they would be playing a character who was five years older. But all of them, when they heard about the change, were really excited about it. Actors are artists and they always want to do something different and new. It was the same reason why David Conrad was excited about last season’s change. We were also kind of torn about not being able to see certain things about the child. For some of these we may do flashbacks, but there is so much story there. What are the characters doing now, five years into the future? Their characters have all grown and changed. Ned is in college studying the occult, Delia’s now got a thriving real estate business. She’s still helpful in the store but she’s got her own thing now. Jim is a doctor. He’s always dreamed of being a doctor, saving lives on a whole new level. And Melinda has a relationship with her son. Will last season’s Jim/Sam storyline play any role in the new season? Not really. One of the results of jumping ahead five years is you miss some of that story too. We felt because we played most of those parts of that storyline, we could move ourselves away from it. He needs to make new friends who accept Sam, you know. By the way, his name is still gonna be Jim because he takes a middle name of James and then goes by that name. That way it’s easier for our audience to stay with the story. So he’s Samuel James Lucas and becomes known as Jim. We’re trying to move forward from that story. Jennifer directed this Friday’s episode. Yes. I don’t know how she does it, she works so hard, long hours, weekends, she does publicity, and she’s an executive producer. To add directing to the mix is a huge burden. But she loves it, and she says to me and to anyone that directing is her favorite thing. She’s a very creative person, has a billion ideas in the best sense of the word and just loves to add things to the mix. She’s one of those people you meet that make you feel lazy because she has so much energy and drive. She’s a force of nature and loves her work. Is she doing any other episodes? This is the second episode she’s done, but she’s been doing this for so long already. She’s learned the set, the workings of the camera and directing - so a lot of that stuff becomes second nature. She’s also gonna do our 15th episode of the season, which is the 100th episode of the series overall. We have big plans for that show. It’s going to be explosive. Any spooky occurrences on set? Well the famous one was last season, with ‘Fire Starter’ about an arsonist. On the first day of prep the entire backlot burned down. I mean, we try not to focus on any connection there because there are a lot of scary things on the show and hope they don’t come true in real life. There have been other weird things happening. Things blowing up with no apparent cause. Things going missing. We don’t know if it’s any more strange than other sets. These things have a little more resonance for us, being on a supernatural show. Any differences in the special effects this season? The biggest new thing is that in a few episodes we’re gonna be starting to introduce some entities which are different from anything that’s been seen on this or any other show. They are pretty terrifying. We’re having to basically invent a whole new category of visual effect for the entities. This is something that Aiden can see and that no one else can see. We just shot the episode where we meet those beings and are figuring out what they look like. Catch the season premiere of ‘Ghost Whisperer’ this friday night on CBS. |
