From The Chicago Sun Times.... The ten women who inspired us in '07 December 31, 2007 BY PAIGE WISER AND LISA DONOVAN Staff Reporters » Click to enlarge image Jennifer Hudson, Hillary Clinton, J.K. Rowling and Lisa Ling are among the women who inspired us this year. (AP) Time magazine named the fantastical writer as a runner-up for Person of the Year, and we're not ones to quibble. The author reignited a passion for reading with her Harry Potter books, and ended the saga to the satisfaction of nearly all her fans. The final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is the fastest-selling book of all time, with 11 million copies snatched up the first day in the United States and England. Diablo Cody A graduate of Lisle's Benet Academy, Cody has conquered the entertainment world -- by age 29. She was born Brook Busey, but reinvented herself as a feminist stripper, blogger, memoirist and celebrated screenwriter of the universally praised "Juno." She has two more scripts in production and has written a pilot for Showtime ("The United States of Tara") based on a Steven Spielberg idea. And that's just the first act. Hillary Clinton Yes, the polls are starting to reveal the 60-year-old Democrat has an uphill battle, but Chicago's favored daughter (an Agence France Presse poll this month revealed she's more admired than Oprah) is the face of a dream come true for many women in the United States -- the first real hope that yes, Virginia, a woman might be elected to the White House. We just wish we could have had a little more say in picking the theme song. C'mon -- Celine Dion? Jennifer Hudson Has an underdog ever triumphed so resoundingly -- and so glamorously? This year's comeback kid may not have won "American Idol," but an Oscar isn't a bad consolation prize. The singer is following it up with a role in the much-buzzed-about "Sex and the City" movie. Lisa Ling While all hell broke loose on "The View" this year, Ling must have been laughing. Somewhere. The do-gooding journalist has globe-trotted as a correspondent for the National Geographic Channel's "Explorer" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show," covering everything from slave girls in India to the Virginia Tech massacre. This year, she solidified her standing with us by marrying Chicago oncologist Dr. Paul Song. We're proud to be her home base. (At right, Ling films an ad for Folgers, which launched a campaign to help Habitat for Humanity.) Jenny McCarthy The zany blond struck a serious note this year, going public with her son's autism diagnosis. Her book Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism was honest, informative, down-to-earth and sometimes painful. McCarthy took a gamble, going public with her problems and shattering her fantasy image. Mothers everywhere thank her. Danica McKellar You probably know her as Winnie Cooper from "The Wonder Years." But McKellar's acting career is just something to fall back on. Her book Math Doesn't Suck targets middle-school girls. McKellar has said that she wanted to prove that math is "accessible and relevant, and even a little glamorous." Her fans have gotten free tutoring in math through her Web site. Jennifer Love Hewitt Long rumored to be the woman John Mayer was singing about in his hit "Your Body Is a Wonderland," the buxom brunet found herself defending that very figure earlier this month after paparazzi pictures of a bikini-clad Hewitt drew cries of "fat." The 28-year-old defended herself on her blog: "I've sat in silence for a long time now about the way women's bodies are constantly scrutinized. To set the record straight, I'm not upset for me but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image. A Size 2 is not fat!" Laila Ali The professional boxer redefined our idea of a female athlete with her memorable turn on "Dancing With the Stars" -- earning a 10 for her rumba. She followed her marriage to former NFL player Curtis Conway with the news that she'll be hosting the new version of "American Gladiators." Now, that's a strong showing. Caitlin Upton You know her better as Miss South Carolina Teen USA -- the contestant who stammered her way through a question about geography with, "I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and uh, the Iraq ..." She may not be the brightest bulb in the marquee, but she did demonstrate to our country how to be a good sport. With good grace, she re-answered the question on the "Today" show and parodied herself on the VMAs. |
