Verona-bred actor livens up 'Ghost' Friday, November 2, 2007 By VIRGINIA ROHAN STAFF WRITER We're supposed to be talking about Jay Mohr's role on "Ghost Whisperer," but a passing mention of talk-show host Joe Franklin sends the Verona-bred comic in a different direction. "Wow, a Joe Franklin reference," Mohr says. "Do you realize how famous he once was? In the day, Joe Franklin was beyond Carson ... in the '50s and '60s. And then, in the early '80s, he started having like someone from Clifton who could play the piano with his feet. I was on, as a 17-year-old comic -- the lead guest." Chatting with Mohr is such a blast that when he says "Ghost Whisperer" is "a really fun place to work," you suspect it's not the usual Hollywood folderol. He's her go-to guy His Professor Rick Payne, who went from recurring to regular character this season, is an expert on occult history and beliefs who thrives on helping Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) gain insight into the paranormal phenomena she encounters. "He's very scatter-brained," Mohr says, from his car, on his way back from taking 5-year-old son Jackson to a swim lesson. "He's got a brain filled with what some may consider useless knowledge. He's very cynical, but if you cut through the cynicism, I think he'd be a lot of fun to be around." Tonight, Payne goes on a date with another university professor (Victoria Pratt), who teaches photography yet refuses to have her picture taken. Hmm. But, as viewers learned earlier this season, he has a little crush on the married Melinda. "We don't know where that's gonna go," Mohr says. Born Jon Ferguson Mohr in 1970, he remembers Verona as "a Norman Rockwell-esque place." Younger than his two sisters and the other boys on his street, Mohr says, "I was alone a lot. I think that's where I cultivated my imagination ... so I wouldn't drive my bike into Verona Lake out of boredom." One creative outlet back then: "I was always a mimic as a kid, and I learned at an early age teachers don't like it when you imitate them," says Mohr, who's known for his impersonations, especially Christopher Walken. Impressive role resume In the 11 years since Mohr's breakout role as Tom Cruise's rival Bob Sugar in "Jerry Maguire," he has accumulated an impressive array of movie and TV credits. Although he says the lead item on his IMDb page is always a non-existent project -- "For a long time, I was remaking 'Fletch.' But I wasn't" -- the upcoming "The Night Watchman" is real. Mohr sports a big moustache and gained 18 pounds for his role as Detective Sgt. Mike Clady in the film. "It's sort of like 'Mission: Impossible' for cops, and I'm the guy that's the head-crusher," says Mohr, who's still trying to lose the extra weight, for the sake of wife Nikki Cox. Since August, he's been writing a weekly column, "The Alternative," for FoxSports.com. "It's fun until you can't think of what to write," says Mohr, who also does 20-minute companion video segments each week. Recently, "The Alternative With Jay Mohr" got a Wave Awards nomination. The awards event will be presented on Jan. 15 by the Academy of Wireless Arts, Video and Entertainment. "I don't know who my competition is," Mohr says. "It's probably a Kanye West ringtone or something. I'll go down fighting, though." |
