Does anybody remember the controvers about whether or not they should be shown because they were kind of see thru?

Sure do, those alternate shots were digitally altered and were plainly see-through, the headlights were on. The initial sales of that GQ issue were going for over $150 on EBAY due to the controversy. I'm quite sure there's still a camp that claims they were not altered at all, even this board went nuts for a while over those images.

Here's another funny fact regarding this GQ mag. Safesearching is very protective of Love's image, quite overprotective. Yet, to this day they still post this doctored GQ image at her official site. See it here:
