When you've got a strong enough lineup -- and the network will finish this season as No. 1 in total viewers and a highly competitive No. 3 among younger viewers -- you can happily renew 18 of your current shows and make only minor adjustments in terms of time periods. The CBS schedule, with new shows in capitals: Sunday 7 p.m.: "60 Minutes'' 8 p.m.: "The Amazing Race'' 9 p.m.: "Cold Case'' 10 p.m.: "Without A Trace'' Monday 8 p.m.: "How I Met Your Mother'' 8:30 p.m.: "THE CLASS'' 9 p.m.: "Two And A Half Men'' 9:30 p.m.: "The New Adventures of Old Christine'' 10 p.m.: "CSI: Miami'' Tuesday 8 p.m.: "NCIS'' 9 p.m.: "The Unit'' 10 p.m.: "SMITH'' Wednesday 8 p.m.: "JERICHO'' 9 p.m.: "Criminal Minds'' 10 p.m.: "CSI: NY'' Thursday 8 p.m.: "Survivor'' 9 p.m.: "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation'' 10 p.m.: "SHARK'' Friday 8 p.m.: "Ghost Whisperer'' 9 p.m.: "Close to Home'' 10 p.m.: "Numbers'' Saturday 8 p.m.: crime drama repeat 9 p.m.: crime drama repeat 10 p.m.: "48 Hours Mystery'' Even the one big move that CBS made had some of the steam taken out of it in advance. That the network was going to kill "The CBS Sunday Night Movie'' was the worst-kept secret in TV world and that it would move "Without A Trace'' from Thursday to Sunday was the second-worst. The only real question was what else it would toss into the Sunday lineup (it turned out to be "The Amazing Race,'' which may find it tough sledding against ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'' at 8 p.m.) and where "Trace'' would go (10 p.m. was the answer with the underappreciated "Cold Case,'' above, moving to 9 opposite "Desperate Housewives.'') I have to admit that I think it's sad that there is now no weekly vehicle on any network for TV films and miniseries. But the offerings on "CBS Sunday Night Movie'' had gotten pretty lame -- there were exceptions like Tom Selleck's series of Jesse Stone movies -- and the ratings had gone in the tank. Other than the Sunday moves, the schedule changes were modest in the extreme. "Shark,'' a legal drama that has gotten reasonably good advance buzz, got the coveted spot after "CSI'' on Thursdays. "Smith,'' a serialized thriller with an impressive cast headed by Ray Liotta, gets "NCIS'' and "The Unit'' as lead-ins on Tuesday. On Wednesdays, the network will try to figure out how to sell a sci fi drama to its audience, having failed (miserably) with the good "Threshold'' last fall. This time around, it's a show called "Jericho'' about a small town that survives a nuclear smackdown and it sounds, from descriptions, a bit like "Desperate Housewives'' meets "The Day After.'' (I must admit I have a tough time getting my brain around that one.) And the word is that the pilot is quite slick. On the comedy front, the one fall newcomer is "The Class,'' which CBS got after a bidding war with NBC and ABC. As part of the deal, the show -- from David Crane of "Friends'' -- was given a spot in the lineup before a single scene was shot. (Reportedly, the CBS suits breathed a big sigh of relief when the taping of the first episode went well.) It gets the time period at 8:30 p.m. between "How I Met Your Mother'' and "Two And A Half Men'' -- which isn't a bad place to be even though the network's Monday comedy lineup took a ratings slide this season after "Everybody Loves Raymond'' departed. Bottom line: While NBC and ABC have to hope that viewers will sample a bunch of new series and move along with old series to new time periods, CBS can just sit back and rake in the advertising cash with its very stable schedule. |

Styles come and go, and the only constants are the wafer-thin beauties who wear them. How can an ordinary girl -- a slightly plump plain-Jane from Queens -- possibly fit in? If you took a moment to get to know Betty Suarez, you'd see how sweet, intelligent and hard-working she is. But few people do because, in the world of fashion, Betty is the oversized square peg in the petite round hole. When publishing mogul Bradford Meade hands the reigns of his fashion magazine, Mode, over to his son, Daniel, he specifically hires Betty as his son's new assistant - mostly because she's the only woman in NYC Daniel won't sleep with. Though this "player" is reluctant to accept her at first, Betty's indomitable spirit and bright ideas will eventually win him over. Neither of them really knows the ins and outs of the fashion world, but the two of them are a formidable team against the label-wearing sharks who will do anything to see them fail. Executive producers Salma Hayek and Silvio Horta, the creator of "Urban Legend," bring the Latino television phenomenon to an English-speaking audience. America Ferrera ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") and Eric Mabius ("The L Word") are the "Working Girl" couple who tackle the colorful, cutthroat world of fashion head on. Cast: America Ferrera ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants"): Betty Suarez Eric Mabius ("The O.C."): Daniel Meade Ana Ortiz ("Boston Legal"): Hilda Vanessa Williams ("Chicago Hope"): Wilhelmina Slater Tony Plana ("24"): Ignacio Ashley Jensen: Christina Becki Newton ("Charmed"): Amanda Mark Indelicato: Justin Alan Dale ("The O.C."): Bradford Meade Credits: EP/Writer: Silvio Horta ("Jake 2.0") EP: Ben Silverman ("The Office") EP: Salma Hayek ("Frida") EP: Jose Tamez ("The Maldonado Miracle") Director: Richard Shepard ("Criminal Minds") Production Company: Touchstone Television Last edited by i love love : 05-17-2006 at 04:50 PM. |
