| From: http://www.cine21.com/Movies/Mov_Box...xoffice_kr.php Well, the debut of "The Truth About Love" beat out the debut of "The Interpreter" for first place in South Korea. <center><table><table border=4 cellspacing=4 bgcolor=white><tr><td>Rank</td><td>Movie Title</td><td>Weekend (Seoul)</td><td>Total (Seoul)</td><td>Total (Nationwide)</td><td>Weeks in Release</td></tr><tr><td>01.</td><td>The Truth About Love</td><td>43,558</td><td>67,748</td><td>162,209</td><td>1 week</td></tr><tr><td>02.</td><td>The Interpreter</td><td>41,600</td><td>60,800</td><td>138,600</td><td>1 week</td></tr><tr><td>03.</td><td>Crying Fist</td><td>35,179</td><td>542,5111</td><td>1,614,738</td><td>4 weeks</td></tr><tr><td>04.</td><td>The Twins</td><td>32,000</td><td>129,000</td><td>450,000</td><td>2 weeks</td></tr><tr><td>05.</td><td>A Bittersweet Life</td><td>24,021</td><td>458,007</td><td>1,232,457</td><td>4 weeks</td></tr><tr><td>06.</td><td>Mapado</td><td>21,000</td><td>???</td><td>2,930,000</td><td>7 weeks</td></tr><tr><td>07.</td><td>Meet the Fockers</td><td>20,500</td><td>52,500</td><td>215,000</td><td>2 weeks</td></tr></table></center> All the numbers are admissions totals. In South Korea, the weekend numbers are considered only Saturday & Sunday (4-23 & 4-24), that's why there is a difference between the first two rows. For those curious, 162,000 admissions would equal roughly $1.1-1.2 million US. By comparison "If Only" opened with 107,400 admissions, but was leggy, and ended with over 1 million admissions. Once one of the English sites that covers South Korea's box office posts the US dollar totals, I'll put that up. |

You can't get two better lead actors, yet the story had a couple of huge holes. Oh well, without one hole in particular the movie's story arc wouldn't really work. Now, hopefully we'll be able to critique The Truth About Love someday in the near future. At least it's doing a fair job, even though those numbers are feeble. Maybe moviegoers are a tiny market over there, considering that there's so many bootlegs sold in that part of the world. Then again, it's just South Korea, how big can the numbers be anyway. Make sure to check out the images at TC's link above. It contains a few of the lobby card shots and some others. It also has TWO trailers for the movie. I'd post some of the pix but mindless seems to be down again. [ April 26, 2005, 03:43 AM: Message edited by: i love love ] |

| I actually can't wait to see "The Interpreter". One of the films I've been anticipating for a while, I love those kinds of movies. Anyhow, I'd have to disagree a bit about how the numbers should be viewed. South Korea is actually a fairly big market for films. Of course, $1.1 million is nothing in the US market for a major film (though for a lot of limited release indies, that would be a good number), but you compare that to the other "big" markets, it's quite good. For example, going by last weeks box office in the major markets, $1.1 million would get you 3rd place in Germany, 3rd in Italy, 3rd in Spain, 4th in the UK, tie for 1st in Australia and 2nd in Japan. The only market out there, outside of the U.S., where that kind of gross wouldn't be considered good is France, where it would be lower half of the top 10. Of course, in the end, what her movies make in South Korea aren't exactly a big determining factor in her career, but just saying, that opening would be a good one for just about every market outside of the US. I do agree about hoping one of these films gets a shot in the U.S. marketplace in the not too distant future. Obviously a hit here is what will earn her more chances as a lead and the piling up of films on a shelf will not. Strong showings in other marketplaces can't hurt, so this is a good start, hopefully others will follow. |

| Speaking about The Interpreter, I saw it last Saturday. For whatever reason, we had earlier than the US. It was different than I expected when I watched the trailer. Sometimes kinda boring. I find it a typical Sean Penn movie. I expected more from it, but it wasn't bad. The news about The Truth About Love is really good. Now I have no doubts there will be a R3 dvd release! I don't have high expectations of this movie, so I hope it will surprize me. |
